Default Yoshi: Saddle or Shell?

My girlfriend asked me if whatever was on Yoshi's back was a saddle, which she always believed it to be since her young age.
I strongly felt otherwise, believing it was a shell.

Found this:

I always thought it was a saddle too. I've never thought of it as a shell before, but now that you mention that, it's possible. Since he's a dinosaur it could be a shell that's shaped and functions like a saddle, so both answers could be correct. I've always thought of it as a saddle, but that's just me.

I'm sure you never knew about this:

One of the various early appearances of Yoshi illustrated with a flat "shell" on its back.
There sure was a lot of misinterpretation down the line.

@dragon: You know, that's knowing if the shell is even a part of his exoskeleton. Looking back at SMW, you'd notice the sprites of Baby Yoshi lacks a shell, or even anything. Is it even supposed to be a dinosaur anyway? What a weird ass creature, just look at this shit.

I always thought it was a saddle too, but it could very well be a shell.
