Crash Team Racing

CTR is an old Playstation game that I got out and own'd. I finished adventure mode with ease but was aware of a secret character named N. Tropy. I went back into adventure and got all gold and platinum relics. Didn't unlock him. I went to game faqs and found out it all lied in the time trial section. I went into time trial, unlocked N. Tropy, and beat him in every level. I got him unlocked, lucky me. However, my friend across the street did the same thing. Only thing he had different than ours was he actually got to race against N. Tropy. I've been puzzled over this and am in need of assistance. If you know where to go to race him, please tell me. I'd love to know.
