Re: The election
As long as Trump is willing to enact change, everybody should not be too afraid. Its the media coverage that goes bad all the time.

Re: The election
It's interesting that someone in Ann Arbor, Michigan this weekend did the same thing that DaBackpack just described, heh.
Death threat to someone wearing a hijab. ...Or at least that's what the news reported anyways. I'm not really looking at the news with a straight set of eyes anymore. Still, a report is a report. There are people coming out from the woodwork it seems following Trump's election. Like I said earlier in the thread, I fear this is going to divide us between friends and family. Certainly hope not, because I would like to believe people have respect for the others if they're considered friends (and especially family). ...But... people can be weird and unpredictable. |

In terms of my opinion on Trump himself... I got nothing, just going to wait and see what he actually does once his inauguration occurs. Can't really bitch about the guy now, now can we? His promises are concerning, of course, but how many of those promises are actually realistic is the real question? Only TIME will tell. |

People are very, very afraid, because while Trump couldn't double-back on his word on everything he's ever said any faster, that fact makes him even more so unpredictable, and we can only act on the assumption that his campaign rhetoric is what he actually wants. And his lack of prior presence in politics gives us no inclination that he'll follow the same trend as the rest of them.

Re: The election
An important reality check has come out of the election: Just because something isn't happening to you, doesn't mean it isn't happening.
"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me." -Martin Niemöller

When people make this statement, what do they want from the rioters? To actually "peacefully protest" or to shut up and accept what they're served? I protest a lot and while I've never been prone to violent rioting I have a handful of friends more willing to fuck shit up than I am if they believe the situation calls for it. Usually when I hear this argument (and it is VERY often), the person saying it usually seems to think MLK Jr was a hand-holding hippy who worshiped the white community. I don't think mindless violence will accomplish anything (and in regards to Trump that goes for both sides) but what the fuck do people mean when they say "peaceful protesting"? Living in the city teaches you quickly that holding hands, singing songs and brandishing your "Love Trumps Hate" signs WON'T ACCOMPLISH JACKSHIT. Change only comes when people actually shake shit up. I don't support ransacking or looting or actual violence, but a successful "peaceful protest" (at least IME the protests that actually get legislation signed) still requires you actually shake shit up like chain yourself to a building or illegally sit inside an office until arrest. And with that in mind, I don't think Trump supporters would even support true peaceful protesting (hurr hurr guns hurr hurr hypocrisy) because aren't we supposed to "fall in line" now? However, also as it stands, I think true peaceful protesting would accomplish just as much as rioting currently is (albeit with less property damage) and I think it'd accomplish as much as it did for the Obama birther movement. There's no point of wasting energy this early.

Re: The election
When I hear of riot, I think of destruction like burning buildings, cars, flags, and apparently replica's of Donald Trump. Oh, and also smashing cars and looting, have to have those!
When I hear protest, I think of people doing annoying shit like blocking some pathways, causing a scene in some random street, chanting outside a business, Or just... as plain as I can be, be that annoying asshole that makes people's daily lives harder to do. You can tell which one is the difference here, lol. ... For the record, I also don't think a peaceful protest works out most of the time. Unless your view of "peaceful" is what I just described above, heh. When I hear that, I think of people gathering in a random space that's not disrupting anyone's lives. That's the worst you can do to make a message (you'll get very few responses). |

However, that's what a lot of people seem to expect out of a non-violent protest and they get angry otherwise.

Re: The election
*salt incoming*
I personally believe anyone rioting in Florida deserves an immediate pardon on the ground that old people suck.
