Re: Test your vocab
Quick, objective vocabulary tests:
GRE: http://www.vocaboly.com/vocabulary-test/gre40.php GMAT: http://www.vocaboly.com/vocabulary-test/gmat40.php SAT: http://www.vocaboly.com/vocabulary-test/sat40.php I scored: GRE: 39/40 GMAT: 40/40 SAT: 39/40 I don't know what average scores on these tests are, but substantially lower than this. Some of the words are quite tricky. If these are too easy for you, try this word classification test: http://www.eskimo.com/~miyaguch/schmies.html It's quite hard. I got 183/200. Only 5 wrong in the first 100. The second half I found much harder. Had to guess quite a bit. Looking to bolster your vocabulary? Here's a good list to start with: http://flashcards.dictionary.com/dec.../printdeck/45/ These are words that are quite hard that most people won't be able to define, though they're not esoteric enough to be confined to solely the tomes of academia. You'll run into these words in more advanced reading materials, so it's good to know them.

Re: Test your vocab
40/40 on all three
Really surprised that you'd get 39 on the SAT/GRE ones? Which words did you miss? They all seemed like words you'd know without hesitation. |

I know what both mean, but didn't like any of the answers available. Damn multiple choice Did you try the word classification test? I had to guess quite a bit, mostly in the second half.

Re: Test your vocab
I missed one on the SAT test too. I wish it would tell me which one, it was probably a misclick anyway.
edit: oh, it was 'epic'. I used the adjective and they wanted the noun. Figures.

Re: Test your vocab
GRE: 34/40
GMAT: 36/40 SAT: 36/40 Considering English to be my second language, it's quite good. A lot of the words I encountered were similar in a lot ways to their French translation. Words like abbey, compressible, compatible, corpulence, lassitude and imbibe are the same as in French. |

Re: Test your vocab
GRE: 32/40
GMAT: 32/40 SAT: 38/40 Not too bad, considering my age and whatnot. I'll take it. |

Re: Test your vocab
I tried taking that 200-question test but I keep getting bored like 30 words in. So far nothing wrong but blahhhhhhhhhh. cbf to finish.
EDIT: Did the last 20 just to see -- got one wrong (fuliginous/brilliant) Last edited by Reincarnate; 08-3-2011 at 01:26 PM.. |

Re: Test your vocab
39/40 on the SAT one, but only because I mis-answered "vicarious." I'm pretty used to making stupid mistakes though.

I didn't find it took much longer than the other tests though. However, I wasn't overly analytic about any of the questions. Quote:

Re: Test your vocab
27.7k on rubix's link (idk how accurate this is, I believe myself to be much lower than this because I never read anymore xd)
for reach's vocab links (I think that if you're familiar with the spelling/structure of words and their parts of speech, you can guess a lot of these right; it's what I did for like more than half the ones I didn't know for sure lol) : GRE: 38/40 GMAT: 36/40 SAT: 37/40

To be fair to Langan, the two really don't have much in common. I would hardly call him an agenda 'pusher'. He probably has one, but the man lives in the middle of nowhere and largely keeps to himself. Very little is actually known about him and he probably doesn't care too much about what others think of him. He's content with whatever he's doing there. Also, I wouldn't rely too much on the 'tone' of an interview where most of it was cut out. Obviously he has a bone to pick with certain institutions and establishments, but I don't really disagree with him and I would hardly call myself an academic failure. Anyway, keep it to PM Rubix. This is the vocabulary thread >_>
