There are no good alternatives.
Unless you are going to play it like a fiddle, then you should use rubberbands.

Take some threads of string, tighten them, and grease them up a bit. Make sure the strings are thin enough.

I've seen it done before.

Pubes aren't long enough.

Try growing out your hair and using that instead.
