osu!mania vs. Stepmania
Which game do you prefer, and why? What do you see as the pros and cons of each? Which has the brighter future as it stands?
Right now my time is being equally used between the two, but I'm going to be just focusing on one in the near future and for a long time. Purely out of curiosity, which game do you lean towards, and why? |

Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania
I am leaning more towards Stepmania mainly because the timing on osu!mania is weird for me to get used to and that the interface bothers me. I also do not like the fact that you have to time the hold and release of each hold note for osu!mania.
However, osu!mania have a brighter future then Stepmania does seeing that osu!mania has a much bigger fanbase and that the number is growing rapidly. It is being maintained and it gets updated every few weeks or so which tells you that the game is still extremely active. EDIT: I do enjoy both though.

Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania
This, I love stepmania, but the ever-expanding base of Osu! and Osu!mania players pushing for updates and the ability to create non-area specific beatmaps that can be transferred to all game modes is one thing that helps it grow so rapidly (that's not to say I like that, sometimes it causes !mania beatmaps to be a little off). I can't wait to see more out of Osu! in the future but don't expect to ever replace Stepmania for that style of beat mashing.

Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania
I don't like the fact that most charts are 7K and playing them on 4K won't even get you close to any high score. Holding and releasing on osu!mania is stupid as well.
I'm going to stick with SM. |

Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania
I play osu mania often, well I can say the judgement is a bit "broken" and some charts are really bad, true that you can play the same song in a lot of modes, but some songs are really bad, and if you're 4k only you will have to deal getting 200+ ranks even if you SS.
about holds I dislike them But yes osu community is big very big and it's fun to play. About no many pros, that's true. Skalim is rank 14 on osu!m, I was playing mp with people and he joined the room, I selected a KBSM(stepmania convert) and well I won even doing bad lol. Again the ranking system is really bad

Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania
osu!mania could be really cool, but some things about it (i.e. timing, aesthetic) just don't appeal to me and I would prefer to play stepmania

Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania
oop
As of right now, the only appeal o!m has over sm or lr2 for me right now are loading times, the pp(broken-soon-to-be-possibly-fixed) rankings and other network features that weren't really o!m specific to begin with. (ingame chat, multiplayer, etc.). As far as gameplay is concerned, other keysmash games do much better imo. (but in the end i'll still play all three \o\)

Re: osu!mania vs. Stepmania
bad jokes inc.
osumania is basically this generation's o2jam a.k.a. every chart heavily relies on forced released holds, mashing the spacebar (or w/e 7th key is mapped to), and note density via chord-stream to increase difficulty threshold. top all of this off with poor accuracy/timing judgment and we've got ourselves a game that's ridiculously stupid to score well on unless you grind like east asia. also, if you're looking from a stepmania elitist circlejerk viewpoint in terms of charting/simfile making, every ranked osumania chart is either severely under-layered (considering aspects such as song choice and overall intended difficulty), over-layered (a.k.a. noodle fest chord-streaming with no particular song relevance), or just plain doesn't make sense period. in retrospect though, this is basically r21freak calling every simfile coming from ffr bad (surprisingly, many people there are strong about their opinions...), so this should be taken with a pinch of salt. there are better rhythm game alternatives to osumania to be quite honest (beatmania, bms/lr2, sound voltex, etc.) but it already benefits itself from osu alone. massive integration of gameplay modes, chat integration, ease of access with charting/mapping, online rankings, and overall convenience make osu a far superior online rhythm game in comparison to others. to each their own though.
