How to sync a song with lots of BPM changes
What kind of tools do people use to sync songs that have a lot of BPM changes? I'm always really bad at it and tend to fuck something up since I can't figure out exactly how fast to make a lot of sections. Currently I only have MixMeister BPM Analyzer, which I use to figure out a general baseline, but for songs that have a lot of BPM changes it's hit or miss whether or not it figures out a decent starting point.

Do you use DDReam or Stepmania?
Because either way manually finding the downbeats is the only easy way.

Re: How to sync a song with lots of BPM changes
I'm talking about a general tool for any song regardless of the program used to make the file. But for the sake of clarity let's go with StepMania for now.
Really? You just do everything manually by ear and just increment one BPM at a time or something? That sounds extremely tedious.

you do it manually and it's a lot easier with visual aid in ddream, and with lots of practice you can do it extremely quickly, and not even need to use ddream (although ddream should be more helpful for syncing dymanic bpms and allow greater accuracy) |

I've never used ddream. Guess It's time to take a look if I can find a download link.

Re: How to sync a song with lots of BPM changes
I recently synced a song that had over a dozen bpm changes.
What I usually do in this situation is, do it manually. I use a BPM ticker (all8.com) as that section of the song plays, tap as accurate as I can. Round the BPM and tweak it if need be, then do it again for the next portion. Esp in my case in some parts it changed literally every other beat in odd intervals (not 100 to 200, more like 123 to 159), you really need ddream. Actually it depends greatly, what kind of song are we talking here? |

Has quite a lot of gradual BPM increases/decreases that I'm sure would be rather difficult to get right. First one is at 1:17 for example. I guess it's just that I've never tried synching something so complicated so I don't know any tricks or obvious things to look for that would make it easier.

Re: How to sync a song with lots of BPM changes
You can get pretty close with Stepmania editor with practice, but you'll never be 100% accurate.
DDReam is MUCH more accurate, you can literally view the waveform at 0.001 second intervals and make sure you have the downbeat correct at that level of precision, if you want to. But even if you're not dicksyncing and just want something that feels right to play, for speedups and stuff DDReam's definitely the best tool. Some of my files have had 1000+ bpm changes, its not a big deal once you figure out a system that works for you. I think my Toccatina file had a bpm change for every note in the song but I remember it only took like 2 hours to sync everything. The song you linked will have the advantage of a super clean waveform in DDReam during the chiptune sections. Definitely a great song to start learning DDReam syncing with, in fact!

Re: How to sync a song with lots of BPM changes
i do variable bpm sections kinda weird in ddream
basically i play the whole song, press b on the beat for the whole thing, then go in and move every beat until its in line using shift (I think?) + scroll wheel. Takes like 10 minutes of work per 1 minute of song once you get used to the hotkeys. |

Hi welcome to the stepping community. You can leave your free time on the table by the door. There's cocaine and adderall over there and fruit punch on that side.

Re: How to sync a song with lots of BPM changes
Here is a download of DDReam.
It doesn't look like someone has posted it for you yet. If you need help using DDReam there's a lot of good tutorials, I think Carlos himself did a damn good one. |

Re: How to sync a song with lots of BPM changes
Use DDream. There's only so much you can do with stepmania especially for gradual BPM changes..
The following took me "only" 8 hours on DDream: (After this I launch stepmania editor to put arrows in, because DDream doesn't support downscroll) Last edited by leonid; 03-6-2014 at 09:31 AM.. |
