Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
I started this game about 3 days ago if memory serves, and it's gotten to the point where I can't see straight and my fingers just move on their own amazingly fast (as I'm typing this it feels like I'm averaging 7 billion WPM). A friend referred me to FFR after I complained fervently about how my uni's DDR machine was out of order (d'argh!), and I seem to have found the perfect fix. I'm already starting to feel faint signs of arthritis, but I shan't let them faze me!
My natural inclination was to use the three-finger method with my right hand on the arrow pad, and obviously what feels best is the way to go, but I'm curious to see what everyone's playing preference (newbs and forum geezers alike) is. So, that was my obligatory newb thread, and for ease's sake everyone can call me Manic. Open your arms and accept me, FFR Forums!

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
I offer a very merry welcome to FFR.
Also, may I add that that was a very well written first post. As to what style you should settle on, it is really up to preference. The majority of high ranking players play spread (keys mapped out to letters on the keyboard) or a variation of it. If you want to try it, there's an ingame key mapper under the game settings. Once again, welcome to FFR. |

Please for the love God use proper spelling and grammar.. Oh wai...
I play with zx12 on my keyboard. Please stay around, you type coherently and seem to have it together. Enjoy.

Welcome! The only advice I have is to follow along with what feels most natural to you. It wouldn't do to be playing while uncomfortable now, where's the fun in that?!
Also, I play index. Best regards, Sephyx

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
I'm assuming practically everyone starts playing the way I am; I guess I'll have to play around with the spread option (thanks Trav) and see what feels best. I started playing on the 3-4 difficulty range, as 1-2 was rather boring, but I can't seem to go any higher. I know, "keep practicing and you'll break the spell", but my brain is telling me that 3-4 is boring, yet my hand-eye coordination isn't strong enough yet to go up to 5+.
I'm really liking "Soul Shift (FFR edit)"; I've almost got an FPC on it, but my eyes are making the screen appear as though it's expanding/contracting (It's about 4:20AM and I've been playing for 5 hours straight now), so I can't concentrate. The whole point of what I just said is to get everyone to tell me what their first "niche" song was, and perhaps tell me their progression thus far with FFR. I want to gauge how well I'm doing, plus it's a way to coax some of the other members out of seclusion's dark corridor. Come out and join me, fellow e-gamers! Roost in my thread...mmm yes. Also, thanks for the kind words, it's nice to not be immediately dismissed because of my title.

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
I remember when I got to the point where I could pass the first 100 notes of Beethoven Virus. That was so freaking awesome.
The sooner you play with spread the better you will be. You will suck for the first hour, but after that you should break through and start to get close to your one handed scores. It took me a week to learn to play spread better then one handed. That said I had played one handed for a good 6 months.

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
Ha, I just tried to play Beethoven Virus and only got about 25% of the way through it, with a max combo of 23...I can see how that'd be a sweet feeling.
One-handed feels like the safe way, I'm apprehensive to try spread because of the potential difficulties with any combo arrows, say up+right. Here we go though, I think I'll try out a "dfjk" configuration first, something just feels better about having my hands closer together.

Start close together, as time goes by you will want them further and further apart.

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
Already noticing that actually, I guess I'll keep spreading my fingers until I ultimately adopt your "zx12" style. I can't tell if I'm sucking because of the style, or the fact that I've been up for 24 hours now. I'll assume it's the latter, and let my eyes rest for a few hours. ~Sigh~ FFR how I love and yet detest you at the same time! Thanks for the help, everyone, most specifically Windsurfer, I'm sure I'll have more questions as I venture deeper into the tantalizing abyss known as FFR.

I use spread Alaska style (as kl buttons). I can't believe how wonderful your grammar is. It is simply exquisite in the way it flows from sentence to sentence. I am impressed but feel that such simple wording is a mere understatement of the rarity found within your own writing. Please enjoy your stay and keep using the proper grammar that FFR is so rarely blessed with.

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
Thanks for the feedback guys, you're all really helping facilitate the otherwise annoying process of learning. Another question I have (BOOM passive voice), if anyone would be so gracious as to enlighten me: I'm not seeing very many songs within my range (3-4). I've used the sorting tool on the top left, and there are only 20 or so songs. Can anyone direct me to more? Bear in mind I've tried using the Simfile Database, but 80% (I made that up) of the songs are either incomplete, have a BPM of 400, or are 6-7+.
I know I'm only getting praised for my grammar because 90% (I made that up too) of the members here say "lolz u r teh suxxorz", and it's funny because all I'm doing is utilizing proper English. It makes one feel good to see his/her relatively error-free post amidst a turbulent sea of "lol" "pwnz" and "roflhamburger". I made that last one up too, 50 credits say that'll turn up in another forum some time today.

All the cool people up three fingers, like me.
Anyway, welcome to FFR. Now, you've got 7 posts under your belt, I'm assuming you've seen the rules any what not, so no lecturing. Just a friendly welcome! Oh, and keep up the good posting habits! |

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
Yeah I've read all the rules, I don't expect they'll be hard to follow. I do have a question though, in regards to extreme language. My signature is a pretty colorful phrase in German, is that going to be a problem? I mean it to be amusing, but of course I don't want to offend anyone, nor break any rules.

Earthbound is my favorite game; I still remember when I got my first SNES and that game was in the bundle. You're automatically cool for recognizing Ness, good on ya mate.

Welcome to FFR! I should warn you - although you seem to have already found out - that FFR is extremely addicting. Just have fun and be nice, and the community will welcome you with open arms.
*hugs* As for my playing style, I use D F K L. I've tried other play styles, but that's just what feels most natural to me. |

Hi, welcome to ffr. The best advice I can offer you to be able to do the higher levels is to switch to two hands. Good luck.

Re: Obligatory "Hi I'm a newb" Thread
I think I'm going to stick with the 3-finger method with the arrow keys. Admittedly, I didn't stick with the spread style long enough to make an accurate decision about its merit, but hell I just seem to be more proficient with the 3-finger method. Plus it seems like almost nobody uses it, so if I master it I'll be awesome like rzr. Thanks for the welcome, and the hug...I think.
