what's going on right now is nothing more than political theater. the markets aren't getting nailed by this or anything. the markets *CAN* if stuff drags on too long and shit hits the fan, but it's a low-probability event. Last edited by Reincarnate; 10-1-2013 at 08:54 AM.. |

Re: Let the shutdown begin
this is basically the date when the treasury runs out of money
people not getting paid sucks, but it's not going to tank our economy or anything. now, not raising the debt ceiling and defaulting on our previously-allocated obligations... that's something you don't really want to fuck around with. we've come close in the past (timewise), but it's pretty much taking the country hostage financially, which IMO should be fucking illegal. every time stuff like this happens, re-elections should auto-trigger. using the economy as a bargaining chip is utterly ridiculous. and not to attack lito but what he was saying earlier is what you DON'T want to get in the habit of doing, which is "market timing." it's basically what most people think of when they think of stock markets unfortunately: Buy when shit hits the fan, sell it off to make a quick buck. but this requires you to know in advance when to get in and out. the markets are generally pretty good at pricing things fairly nowadays (and mind you that the price *already takes into account future expectation*, a big point people seem to gloss over) and odds are you aren't going to do better on average. if something is "obvious," it's already priced in. if it's not obvious, you're running blind. otherwise people attribute to intentional decision-making what is actually attributable to variance and looking at too small a timespan -- which hurts you in the long run if you plan to extrapolate that strategy. look instead to invest for the long term. All of this news feels really grimy to me. This is basically extortion right?

Re: Let the shutdown begin
IMO: We should just default. We aren't realistically going to pay off the (almost) $17 trillion debt. Not the direction the government is heading.
We are a little over $40 billion away from the $17 trillion mark. |

Re: Let the shutdown begin
So with the current government, we're just going to keep "kicking the can"?

Re: Let the shutdown begin
better to kick the can then throw it in the trash compactor and possibly incite even more conflict as a side effect

Re: Let the shutdown begin
As a guy who lives in "socialist" Canada, I find this amusing.
