Come to think about it, I only ever click MSN and Firefox on my desktop when I first log on. Everything else is done via menus.

I could really cut down my desktop.

Squeek would probably hate the directory scheme on my computer.

C:\ and E:\ both have over 200 folders in just their base dirs. They also have thousands of loose files both in the base dir, as well as in random folders everywhere.

Finding anything useful is impossible unless you know that C:\Bittorrent, E:\Downloads\, E:\Downloads\Bittorrent, and E:\Downloads\Soulseek\Music are the folders where I keep stuff. Everything else is just random crap lying around my computer that I don't even know what is.

Why.

I just don't understand.

Root folder: X:\My Stuff. This folder appears on the desktop as an expandable option, much like quicklaunch. Clicking the arrow shows these folders:

Anime, Downloads, Games, Junk, Manga, Movies, Songs, TV Shows.

Anime Folders: Movies, Music, Series, Videos. Movies = Anime Movies. Music = Anime Music. Get the trend going on here? Music is sorted in an odd manner, but it works. There are folders for each show I have a soundtrack to, then subfolders for discs. There is one folder for OPs and EDs that I enjoy.

Downloads: Where downloads are downloaded to, then sent to another folder.

Games Folders: Music, Playable, Videos. Music = Video Game Music. Playable = Games that you don't install. Stepmania is one. Videos = Video game videos. Trailers, etc. The music folder here is similar to the anime version. I keep soundtracks with their respective games and just scattered songs in another folder.

Junk: Folder for install files I need to keep handy. Also pieces of installations I just don't want lying around but still want to be able to have easy access.

Manga: Folders of manga. Each folder is subdivided into volumes and chapters, depending on the manga.

Movies: Folders of movies. Folder name = Name of movie. File name = Disc 1, Disc 2, etc. I figure that I already know what folder I'm in, so there's no need to have the movie name in the file name.

Songs: Organized by artist. These songs are not associated with video games or anime. They all go here.

TV Shows: Amazing concept coming!! I keep each show in its own folder! Then I separate the episodes into their seasons and name them by their episode number. Hilariously devious!

Keeping your computer organized is unbelievably easy. Just stick with your organizational method that you prefer and sort new things to accomodate to your organization.

I don't understand why people DONT use their desktops.

Seriously, it's not using something that is incredibly useful.

I am all for keeping computer organized but there is a point where it is just an overkill. Balance is the key.

I was so afraid of Squeek, so I did a desktop cleanup before I print screened it.

Got to have my boat as my desktop.

Because I don't care enough to organize 120 gigs of random ****. I just keep everything in the folder I downloaded it to (one of the Bittorrent folders, mostly, as I rarely download things using anything else nowadays). I actually know where to find pretty much anything, but no one else has any idea. It's great.

But of course, as long as you can find things, who am I to complain.

I organize my files because I share stuff with friends over lans fairly often. I don't like having to divert attention away from what I'm doing to explain to them the location of what it is they want.

Also because I'm an organized person by nature. My room is always clean. My car is always clean. My spelling is always clean. And so on.

The only thing I don't care to clean is the ID3 tags on my MP3s. I do it sometimes but just lose interest when I know I have 20,000 left to do.

I'm obsessive about the tags on my mp3s. They always have to be neat and I have a genre for almost all of them. I just fix them as soon as I add the songs.

What happens when you get 30,000 dropped on you all at once.

Huh.

What happens then.

I seriously doubt anyone is going to download 30000 mp3s at once.
