Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
Pretty much. Since apple switched to intel proccesors everything can be run on anything. Although mac osx might be a dumbed down operating system and basically made for the computer illiterate it has certain applications for people who don't want to learn how to use a computer.
When it comes to apple hardware I can't see any reason to buy it over regular hardware. Apples hardware is half the performance for two times the cost. I would most likely use a linux distro 100% of the time if most of the programs I used weren't elusively for windows. And when I say programs I mean games. Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
but there's no discussion in hardware. Apple's hardware is on an awful %300 markup, don't buy it.
See, that was boring. I'd much rather go for the interesting discussion on the OS's.

One thing that irks me about the Mac OS's is that you can't use drives formatted NTFS with them, only FAT or FAT32.

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
That isn't Apple's fault. NTFS is a closed source filesystem intended only to be used by Windows OS's. Linux can only do it with some reversed engineered driver that doesn't work 100%, but well enough. You can blame Microsoft for this. I'm surprised Apple still uses FAT32. It would probably be pretty easy for them to implement an open source filesystem like EXT4 of BTRFS considering Mac is now basically a Linux OS, and was based off UNIX in the first place.

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
I'm sure that Apple is fully aware of that as well, and capable of creating their own equivalent, but they haven't.

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
I was just poking around google seeing if Apple has a defragmenter considering FAT filesystems fragment files very easily, and apparently they don't and all they have to say about it is "you probably won't need to optimize at all if you use Mac OS X,". The OS really has nothing to do with if files are going to be fragmented or anything. More Mac propaganda.
EDIT: Woops, looks like Apple now has HFS+ instead of FAT32. Last edited by fido123; 12-27-2010 at 07:28 PM.. |

as for hardware WQXGA monitor and its appearance are nice, nothing notable about parts like processor, graphics card, etc (unlike G3-G5 era).

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
I see quite a few people have thrown the "mac is only good for graphic designers" line out there...
Having been in that field for a number of years, I've definitely seen a huge shift in production on Macs. They are becoming extremely phased out for artistic production, and being replaced with high powered PCs. Especially in this economy, where people want the most for their money, and a Mac is NOT that in any way shape or form. I only know a small handful of other designers who still use Macs. The industry itself is growing exponentially, and the industry calls for higher quality work, which means bigger file sizes and more processing power needed to create each project on time...Apple just doesn't keep up with the power curve of today's technology, and they're beginning to suffer from it. Also, Windows7 is kicking a ton of ass. OSX no longer has the 1up on any other operating system really, it's lost its flair. |

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
My dad never really liked PCs for graphic design stuff, so he's completely addicted to Macs. He's a total Mac fanboy I guess. Not really gonna try to convince him otherwise anyway, he always had trouble with PCs in the 90s and was glad to stop using them once he got hired by Capital One in '99. IDK if he'd ever go back PC, he is old after all. And old people are stubborn. lmao

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
False logic in this thread:
1) Mac's don't have right clicks. System-->Preferences-->I forget the rest-->enable goddamn right click-->apply OMFG I can right click! [Pretty sure this is like..standard on any model post2003 and possibly even before that] 2) Mac's are for people who are into "serious music and graphic design" This was years ago. Many of those top companies used to be Mac exclusive. Wait.... used to be. The argument is near invalid nowadays. Custom Built > Mac > Linux > Windows Xp > Windows 7 > Windows 95 > Windows Vista In order of practicality due to price/most people are computer illiterate: Windows 7 > Windows XP > Mac > Custom Built > Windows Vista > The rest > Linux In order of what people who are computer illiterate and still have to worry about price: Custom Built > **** everything else. /thread

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"
I never bother with Macs because I can get everything I need from a PC.
Whether it's on performance, price point, hardware, or software... I can just get it all on a PC. You have to realize though that Mac is aimed at a "simpler" demographic. People don't want to pay less for something that may require more customization and know-how. They're okay with paying more for something pretty that'll let them do basic things like manage simple media and surf the web and maybe handle a few games with decent output.
