Wait, your book was 154 pages long and you cite a massive number of well handled characters?

...

My first book was around 175 pages long and had, I think, 8 central characters that travelled as a group, and it was pretty terrible. They weren't fleshed out at all.

My second book was around 250 pages long, and had about the same number, and they were still under developed, but slightly better. It also featured a massive number of subplots, most of them drug/murder/ghost related, so there were around 15 secondary characters to keep track of that popped in and out of the story.

I just don't see how having a 'massive number of characters handled well' in 154 pages is feasible if, with a smaller number of characters and longer novels, I have trouble keeping it all together.
