I don't really understand why they have to be official labels in the first place, it's pretty meaningless. What does arbitrarily deciding that the 91s aren't FSOs accomplish? I find the names to be a nice way to describe general difficulty but I fail to see why they have to be taken so seriously at the thresholds (and I wouldn't miss them if they didn't exist, I'd just be using terms like "70s" and "80s" instead of "FMOs" and "FGOs").

I'd have to say that 1-20 is the better system since it nicely categorizes the songs by difficulty without one single number encompassing a massive difficulty range as 1-13 does... But that's too many difficulty names to keep track of so in the context of difficulty names 1-13 wins. The scarhand/speedvibe tokens should probably match it though, whichever system stays as the official secondary difficulty categorization. I just kind of hope they don't influence the rating of songs on the 1-99 scale, even though the Stinger/etc. talk in this thread seems to indicate it will do exactly that...

tl;dr I don't care, it all means nothing.

For Scarhands Only

I was hoping to see Jae implement the 1-20 system, but went with a "temporary" 1-99 system. Sadly, he disappeared and pretty much left us with this difficulty system. I'd still want to see how the 1-20 ratings will play out, it's a much wider range. With the amount of simfiles we have in game, it will soon be overflowed with an x difficulty number where we will eventually question if x difficulty must be y difficulty, it could become a huge mess.

I don't like it either since it is like saying "if you aren't a master, you can't play this" etc. instead just say Master and Guru without the For and Only parts of it.

This way you could also have something like Brutal, Legendary, Revolutionary (this was the 10 foot label in DDR back before 6th mix), etc.

I actually like Revolutionary because this is Flash Flash REVOLUTION after all.

Yeah, I'd definitely like to see the old 1-13 system back in the game. First of all as that was the system that I and a lot of people on this site were used to for so long. Also, the fact that it is a relatively reliable ranking system helps. Also, coupled with the 1-100, it's a good way to measure a file's difficulty as 1-100 is very specific in measuring how hard a file is whilst the 1-13 is a more generalised way for measuring files. I like it.

Stinger/Slashmaid just don't feel like 13's. Getting decent scores on them compared to J'ai and Scmoll was the issue that threw them off balance. 1-13 grouping for new songs will still be decided by 1-99 scale since it's far more accurate. 1-13 just consolidates and groups files together.

Naming them has been a thing ever since the site was created. Everyone grew up and around VC, C, diificult, VD, FMO, FGO, etc. Having names gives it slightly more meaning to players instead of numbers.

The 1-99 scale as a whole is very accurate and I like that it exists. As for names, the old names are the best IMO, mostly because it's simply what we're used to use. Terms like VC, FMO, FGO...

I'm not D6/D7 enough to seriously judge whether 90 or 91 should be the FSO line, and whether Stinger and Slashmaid would belong in that group. But yeah, I'd like to see the old 13 names back.

I currently have no idea what a Guru song is or what a Brutal song is et cetera, rofl.

I dont understand why the 1-13 system is necessary, i feel that the 1-99 does a great job in portraying exactly how hard songs are and how they hold up compared to one another. The 1-99 doesnt work well with the names like Guru, FSO, FMO ect. but i think those names are arbitrary anyway. There is no reason that Within Life (66) should named the same thing as Eradication (75), that range is too large and can be confusing if they were both simply an 11 difficulty.

I think people want these difficulty names back because everyone is so used to them. Even after they've been technically removed for a while, it hasn't stopped people from consistently using the terms to describe the files (or scores they get on them). If we have to assign difficulty names to songs, I believe the 1-13 difficulty scale would be preferable, mainly because that system stuck with the community. I don't even know the majority of the 1-20 difficulty names honestly.

Granted, more and more people are using numbers alone to describe file difficulty (like myself), and I find that to be a better representation. Though you said in conjunction, so I suppose it really doesn't matter, since people are using the 1-13 scale to represent scoring skill/file difficulty still.

Ideas for difficulty 13:
Revolutionary (Liked this one by Doss)
Unrelenting
Inconceivable
Ludicrous

Deer god yes please, just keep 1-99 and 1-13. Suggestion for 13 is "For Legends Only"

Ah woops i didnt really read the op before i commented so i misunderstood what this thread was about. I'm all for integrating the difficulty names from the 1-13 system into the 1-99 one. What OWA suggested in the op makes a lot of sense to me and it compliments the skill tokens.

I also really like Dossar's suggestion of Revolutionary for 13's

One reason I always liked the VC, FMO, FGO, FSO titles is because they always had this meaning to me: VC = D4, FMO = D5, FGO = D6, FSO = D7, if that makes sense.

edit: not specifically the names themselves, but the difficulty ranges

is what i propose, but i'm sure most people would be opposed to moving FMO/FGO up a step since we're super used to calling songs FMO/FGOs (can u imagine calling OMW an FMO lol)
i still think this is good

If we do implement the 1-13 difficulty system, then I'd like 11 to be Master, 12 to be Guru, and 13 to be Revolutionary. ^.^

11: For Masters Only
12: For Gurus Only
13: For Legends Only -- this works for me, personally.

also (in my opinion):
- Stinger = 90, Slashmaid = 90, Schmoll = 90, J'ai = 89;
- FSO = 91+

(the schematics of this belong in another thread.)
