Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
The headlines tomorrow... FFR user Reincarnate wanted on suspicion of mass robbery against FFR users who admitted to keeping their properties unlocked.
UK, Locked. Personally I think it must be nice to live somewhere you can have your door unlocked all the time, and friends are pretty free to come and go. I'm from the UK, and I've always grown up with my doors locked. Since moving in with my nan we have them unlocked a fair portion of the time for family to come in, but not usually at any time I'm not home. We live in a really quite nice area though, so we probably could get away with having doors unlocked. I left my bike unlocked out the front of my house for over a year without it getting stolen, then left it overnight in Portsmouth town centre, locked up, and it got nicked. |

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
i really don't see a good reason why you would leave your doors unlocked 24/7, if youre manning the house that's one thing but if no one's there, you should have some sort of system so it isn't as easy as turning a knob to break in. although in my experience, most thievery goes on between friends or acquaintances. so don't let your guard down man, there's plenty of things you wouldn't think are valuables that people would steal and you would sorely miss. that goes for cars too.

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
I don't even realize it most of the time, but I always turn the little deadbolt on our inside doors (between rooms and hallways).
Kinda been a stickler recently about the front door since the weather has been nice. I come home from school and it's unlocked so I can get in, but I lock it once I'm inside. Back door, door to the garage and front door are always locked up at night before bed. American. -o24

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
My rents had to where we used to live (parma, ohio). It got to the point where my dad would check a few times just to ease his mind. Then we moved to the suburbs and literally no crime here (cept on the highway...potheads or whatever passing through our city). The cops are really on top of things though so yeah. Also, living in a development in the super far back, butted up against the woods.
I guess racoons or deer could break in...omg. Deer. ****. Just remembered a reddit thread. A deer crashed through someone's window and was smearing its blood all over trying to find a way out. Finally it got out. Yup. Anyway... |

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
We used to always leave our door unlocked up here in Canada but one day someone broke in and stole everything valuable we had and smashed everything... Now our door is locked 24/7

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
That's why we have locks in the first place????
You wouldn't leave your car unlocked either. But if someone wanted to break in, they could. They could do the same to your house-- if they had the intention of breaking in and it's locked, the chances of success are dimmed but if someone has that intent, they're likely going to find a way to do it, locked or not. Just making their job easier.

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
I used to leave my door ajar when I was in a dorm...it was funny, because my 'neighbour' would not only lock her door, she kept her music on 24/7 to make people think she was in.
I actually try to lock the apt door when no one's home, but I forget sometimes. |

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
i have this steel gate type shit outside of my door that i leave locked. not to worried about the main door considering it'd make a crap ton of noise if someone were to try to kick it open, break in or something

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
Locked, always. Deadbolt and all. I never leave them unlocked, even if I'm expecting people. I don't live in the best area of town and crimes are moderately common here.
Don't really see the point in leaving them open. Too many break ins in this area, and we've had an attempted robbery here while I was home. Guy had a gun, but I called the police (thankfully the police got him on escape route), so I get a chuckle out of people that think it's cool to leave it open as long as you're home. I know lots of people that leave them open all of the time. Most of them live in rich neighborhoods. Not sure why break ins in these areas aren't more common. It would be easy as hell to rob my dad blind half of the time. Guess it's probably because most criminals come from low SES areas and target homes in areas they're familiar with.

Re: Dear Canadians/Americans
If a criminal was trying to break into my parents house then it wouldn't really matter if it was locked or not. On the other hand I always lock my dorm room. There is no way to get into that room forcefully without taking off the door since it is on the 8th floor.
