Re: Simfile Database
WC: I would have to buy all the stuff to make a server and my internet isn't very good anymore so it wouldn't be able to handle downloads
rayword: Doubt it. This would be something completely different than the FFR database. It's not about retrieving old files, its about building a new database to put everything on. Starting from scratch |

Re: Simfile Database
Why not just use a regular webhost for something like this? Being that it's only offering downloads, you don't need something extremely intensive.
Find a webhost that allows a large amount of space, and then figure out how to have account-based storage on it (just like the other simfile databases had). |

Re: Simfile Database
That's what I figured anyway. I'm pretty sure I had unlimited bandwidth and like 500 GB of space on redfraction.us, which is why I was planning big projects that never got done. And that was for $10 per month

Re: Simfile Database
"Unlimited" bandwidth is not really unlimited. It's basically, "use as much as you want until other users on your shared server start feeling it". The fine print usually says something about how they're allowed to terminate you if you start using excessive server resources. But it would be smart to start off with a dirt-cheap hosting plan, for two reasons, 1: this might not ever get popular enough to require TB's of data transfer and 2: cheap hosts might tolerate tons of data transfer and storage as long as you're not eating CPU and memory with tons of computation.
However, if it got to the point where data transfer is an issue, a dedicated server would be the answer. Disk space should not be an issue since disk space is cheap, cheap, cheap and we're only hosting simfiles, not streaming video or anything intense like that. The problem with dedicated servers is that they're expensive, usually around $200 a month for the low-end.

Re: Simfile Database
Nobody is going to put in enough money for $200 a month and I'm not paying that by myself anyway so yeah. We would be doing simple web hosting for now

Re: Simfile Database
Right, if it ever got to the point of a dedicated server you would probably need ads to raise the money, since donations will never be enough.

Re: Simfile Database
I doubt it would pull enough traffic to get a significant amount of coin from ads.

Re: Simfile Database
Just make a "minipack" and put it on mediafire. Or get izzy to put it on his simfile database.

Re: Simfile Database
So should I work on a database design/site design/feature description? Even if this never comes to fruition (like most ambitious stepmania plans...lol), I could always use the practice. Anybody else could help too (don't want to seem like an egomaniac ).

Re: Simfile Database
single releases are fine for now imo, its not like theyre huge downloads
if anything if you want to keep to this whole pack idea basis, make 2 or 3 files and put it all in one zip onto mediafire and post the zip. 20~25MB downloads are pretty fast and usually take around one to three minutes. it'd be cool if we could get a database up like the old FFR one again. i used FFR for single releases all the time when it was around |

Re: Simfile Database
If you wanted to try and make something I would not be opposed. I can explain what to make and how. But I'm still not really sure if this is happening yet. I'm not committing to anything if I'm the only person paying for it and there's not a community attached. (RF)

Re: Simfile Database
If I were in a better financial situation I'd pitch in, but I couldn't commit at the moment. Unless we figured out exactly what we needed and if it were cheap enough etc.

Re: Simfile Database
I actually can't imagine it being more than $10 per month until it got very large. I just don't know what the bandwidth usage is going to be like with 100+ potential packs being uploaded and being downloaded every day

Re: Simfile Database
Rebirth, we (me, you and Charlo since we're the only ones that serious) should maybe talk about this more privately, figure out the host and such and get organized.

Re: Simfile Database
I am all for a new simfile database, but the process of discovery and recommendation needs to be possible in it. Think about how in bemanistyle if you wanted to try new files you had to have a song name, song artist or simfile artist in mind already - there was no tagging system, no way to search for only pad or only keyboard files, by difficulty, by genre, by files that people who like the same files as you like, etc etc etc. If you need any help with that kind of thing (either conceptual or implementation) give me an IM, I might be able to help
