Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two
2nd for Round 9, I guess.
3rd probably goes to whoever wakes up first. |

Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two
Nobody has solved the bonus yet. You bastards and your breaking of my puzzles by coming up with things I didn't think of. The answer to the bonus puzzle is, like the other three inner numbers, a whole number, not a fraction or decimal of any kind.

Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two
Okay, seems like people are still having some big problems with the bonus puzzle. To the point where I probably should have inverted which one was the round, and which was the bonus.
Anyway, I'm going to give you a more in depth explanation of what's going on. Okay, the biggest misunderstanding that seems to exist here is that the interior square -only- demarcates which number in the outer square is the -ANSWER- As in, if you call the outer numbers A, B and C, and the inner number D; then you generate an equality that goes Some mathematical operations involving A, B and C = D The interior number is not itself a function of any of the operations, solely the result, and is a whole number. Also, the purpose of the "and why?" is that you need to establish a -SINGLE- set of operations that you can apply to all 4 sets of three exterior numbers to arrive at their corresponding interior number. Something like (completely wrong): Multiply the three numbers together, divide the result by 100, and subtract 10. You need to be able to apply that single statement to all 4 sets of numbers and have a true statement. So the fact that three of them sum to various round numbers is coincidental because "summing to 30" =/= "summing to 40" Edit *Sigh* My bad again, I went and gave you the wrong idea with my completely false example of what I was looking for. While that's the kind of "general solution applies to all 4 sets of numbers" that I'm looking for, at no point do you need to introduce numbers that aren't derived from the provided numbers. So if you throw in a "divided by 9" or something like that, you've added in a number that wasn't derived solely from manipulating the numbers provided. Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two
I had a pattern that worked for three boxes, but it did not work for the top left one.

The correct answer doesn't contain anything other than those four operations, no.

So I can't do absolute value or square roots or exponents... ****.
I'm having serious trouble making the bottom right square true. Each number only used once... hmmm |

Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two
I think I've got it. The profile name I got exists according to the PM system, so I think that's a good sign.
EDIT: For the song component, do we have to pass the song? Last edited by Fractal_Monkey; 05-12-2008 at 09:30 AM.. |
