Re: [NEWS] Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear Crisis 2011
Tokyo sent 140 firemen to Fukushima to help the 50 employees and cool down the reactors.

Well I feel even worse for japan, because think of how high the radiation levels are there if they're already finding small traces of radiation from the nuclear disaster(s) 5k miles away in california.

I'm pretty sure everyone in Tokyo has been exposed to some radiation.

Re: [NEWS] Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear Crisis 2011
Just to give you an idea of the levels of the radiation, there are a lot of places in France where the normal radiation is higher than what they are experiencing right now. For somebody living in Tokyo to get sick because of the radiation, you would have to be in it for about 500 years.
Media are blowing this way out of proportion. There's nothing to be afraid of. Nobody will become a zombie because of the radiation. |

Re: [NEWS] Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear Crisis 2011
Hey, nothing's wrong with my country. :c If anything, we're on the other side of the world to Japan. Didn't know we had higher radiation levels than usual, they didn't mention anything in the news.

Re: [NEWS] Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear Crisis 2011
I might have said it badly, but what I meant is that in France, the ground contains rocks that are radioactive (it is the case everywhere, but somewhat more in France). That natural radioactivity is higher than what they are experiencing in Japan. And as far as I know, nobody dies of that in France.

Oh, I'd understood you said the radioactivity from Japan hit France. My apologies.
I didn't know about the rocks here, that's pretty cool! :P |

the amount of elevated radiation is equivalent to maybe 3 or 4 bananas

Re: [NEWS] Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear Crisis 2011
Yea I heard someone having a conversation about the radiation spreading all the way to the east coast of America and it being extremely harmful and fatal. If I wasn't one of the 4 white people in this part of Philadelphia I would have told that person to run and hide underground because their stupidity is more harmful than the radiation to the east coast >.>

A general rule of thumb:
If Japan is still alive, the radiation hitting us isn't lethal. Common sense people, please. |

No, Hawaii. Hawaii has more people of Japanese ancestry than California.
Agreed. |

Re: [NEWS] Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear Crisis 2011
Everything gives off radiation. High energy radiation is coming through our atmosphere constantly, everywhere. The sun gives off radiation (sun burns!). You get high amounts of radiation on every flight you take. On every x-ray you receive. Every trip to the dentist. From the watch on your arm to the tv you watch; everything gives off some amount of radiation.
And we've evolved to become used to it. Radiation is not necessarily a bad thing. Your microwave uses radiation to heat your food. Radios send long wave radiation through the air to transmit music and information. Radiation is only harmful to us at energy levels high enough to penetrate into our bodies and cause damage at a cellular level. As such, we need to treat this problem rationally. Radiation only scares everyone because they can't see it, which makes it hard to understand. I almost guarantee that if the quake had have knocked out a gas power plant in Japan that exploded and killed 1000 people, people wouldn't suddenly start fearing gas power irrationally. They would treat it as an accident. This too, was an accident, that has thankfully been mitigated. Until there is evidence to suggest a serious problem, the crews will continue to do their best to control and repair the situation, and things should be fine.

Today I learned that coal plants produce more radiation than nuclear power plants

Re: [NEWS] Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear Crisis 2011
so basically the amount of radiation in the city near the reactor is just 1.5x the normal intake of radiation from a normal day. which is incredibly negligible.
