it's definitely not the end-all, but I had no alternative. This problem would have been easily alleviated if I had a drive that would mount -- I still can't figure out why I'm getting an error when mounting any sort of "Mass Storage Device" (flash drives, typically). If I was able to do it, I would have slapped the Linux live boot disc image on my flash drive and everything would be perfectly fine.

Huh. Weird stuff. My hard drive has been making sounds for the past year or so and yet this hasn't happened. I think it's vibrations against the tool-less enclosure.

The only way I get blue screens nowadays is by having a crappy sound driver and playing stepmania at the same time.

That's quite unfortunate. I've always been able to fix bluescreens, unless there's a mobo problem @_@

Good luck with the fixing and whatnot.

Aw no I feel for you regarding pictures of your Daughter.

My Daughter is 2.5 now and I've kept all her pictures on the camera SD cards (so I have over 200 of them) on the laptop, a different laptop and on an external hard drive.

Yeah, those pictures are extremely precious to me.

The thought of losing all of my data is scary, but I have so much that I don't have enough space to double it. I guess I should pick what I think is the most important such as my years of schoolwork and particularly folders of pictures.

Your post is kind of misleading because when you say "documents and folders" I think of computer files and when you say "metallic box" I think of a real box holding your valuable information such as birth certificates.

I had to read it over to realize you meant paper documents and paper folders and a computer as the metallic box.

Yeah, always back up what you can't reinstall or download again later. Odds are you won't have terabytes upon terabytes of irreplaceable media.

I kick myself so hard for not backing up my old computer pre-college. It had a ton of old pictures and videos that I can never get back again. I also had a gold mine of oldschool Stepmania/DWI media that I can't find anywhere on the internet anymore. All gone. Ungh.

Hirens Boot CD//mini XP//find & Mount partition

The find & mount partition tool is amazing. Even with "nuked" partitions it rebuilds it on the fly then allows you to copy to other media. You would def want to use the unstoppable copier and skip damaged files. I saved 60GB of pics a few weeks ago. It took about 18 hours of copying though. If you havent already nuked it with factory restore try this first!

This did happen to me a few years ago. My computer started smelling like burning rubber. We shut it off and tried opening it again; it wouldn't be able to read the hard drive.

I feel you. I have no idea what to do in these kinds of situations. ElRayford's suggestion sounds good, though...

Please don't talk about things you have no clue about. Keeps people from being misinformed. Thank you.

Do this. I've used Hiren's Boot CD for repairing a a few MBRs and file systems. It sucks you didn't wait so you could have recovered your data with a live disc but your data still isn't lost. When files are deleted their entries are just removed from the file system's records, but the bits that compose that data stay the same. When you reformat your HDD you're only overwriting the first bunch of your HDD with a new file system database almost. Basically you can still restore your data, haven't done it personally with NTFS, only EXT3/4, but it should definitely be within the realm of the possibility. Just try not to save much to your HDD as the more you save to it the more data it overwrites.
