Re: :(
unmountable boot volumes are not always end-alls. I've fixed em before with boot cd's and diagnostic tools. depends on the situation though obvs.

Re: :(
it's definitely not the end-all, but I had no alternative. This problem would have been easily alleviated if I had a drive that would mount -- I still can't figure out why I'm getting an error when mounting any sort of "Mass Storage Device" (flash drives, typically). If I was able to do it, I would have slapped the Linux live boot disc image on my flash drive and everything would be perfectly fine.

Re: :(
Huh. Weird stuff. My hard drive has been making sounds for the past year or so and yet this hasn't happened. I think it's vibrations against the tool-less enclosure.
The only way I get blue screens nowadays is by having a crappy sound driver and playing stepmania at the same time. |

Re: :(
That's quite unfortunate. I've always been able to fix bluescreens, unless there's a mobo problem @_@
Good luck with the fixing and whatnot. |

Aw no I feel for you regarding pictures of your Daughter.
My Daughter is 2.5 now and I've kept all her pictures on the camera SD cards (so I have over 200 of them) on the laptop, a different laptop and on an external hard drive. Yeah, those pictures are extremely precious to me. |

Re: :(
The thought of losing all of my data is scary, but I have so much that I don't have enough space to double it. I guess I should pick what I think is the most important such as my years of schoolwork and particularly folders of pictures.

I had to read it over to realize you meant paper documents and paper folders and a computer as the metallic box. |

Hahah Izzy...
That blows guys. Hopefully you will be able to go on and make due with what you didn't lose completely, start some things new. More work, but not much you can do. :/

I kick myself so hard for not backing up my old computer pre-college. It had a ton of old pictures and videos that I can never get back again. I also had a gold mine of oldschool Stepmania/DWI media that I can't find anywhere on the internet anymore. All gone. Ungh. |

Re: :(
Hirens Boot CD//mini XP//find & Mount partition
The find & mount partition tool is amazing. Even with "nuked" partitions it rebuilds it on the fly then allows you to copy to other media. You would def want to use the unstoppable copier and skip damaged files. I saved 60GB of pics a few weeks ago. It took about 18 hours of copying though. If you havent already nuked it with factory restore try this first! |

Re: :(
This did happen to me a few years ago. My computer started smelling like burning rubber. We shut it off and tried opening it again; it wouldn't be able to read the hard drive.
I feel you. I have no idea what to do in these kinds of situations. ElRayford's suggestion sounds good, though... |
