Cziffra is very talented in terms of technical proficiency, but I wouldn't hail him as a world-class virtuoso (in regard to expression). I prefer Michelangeli, especially for the entrancingly metronomic and crystalline quality of his interpretations (for instance, Gaspard de la Nuit - Ondine). Sofronitsky was a brilliant Scriabinist, as was Horowitz, whose vivid tone and endearing sentimentality lent a unique sense of identity to his performances. Both Richter and Rubinstein were communicative geniuses, the former able to evoke emotion with sublime phrasing and phenomenal touch, and the latter capable of building atmosphere with magnificent lyricism and superbly natural rubato. Cliburn was exceptionally expressive as well, his famous victory in Moscow an enduring testament to his outstanding musicality. As for fire and passion, Gilels has few equals. Finally, as far as present pianists go, Kissin and Blechacz have proved quite promising for their age, and Hamelin has established himself as a master of technique and improvisation.

That's basically what I was going to say. GGC is so challenging technically so just playing it makes people forget about the emotional aspects of music. I play violin so I'm not really familiar with any of the great pianists in history, but this is probably pretty high up there.

I used to play the piano but I quit because I wanted to play the Drums, Football, and Baseball.

My sister (9) plays the piano and she's pretty good.
