Running shoes are not cleats or spikes as you are thinking. They're a type of gym shoe that I normally wear. They're flat-bottomed and have grip. I've used the same style (running) for years. My skill level only keeps increasing, through my own development alone; not my shoe. This is my best recent score:

For those of you that don't know, on ITG2, Fantastic is the equivalent of Marvelous. Excellent is the same thing as Perfect.

Most people that are serious about the game start to play on their toes once they understand what they have to do. Playing on your toes helps you learn balance and coordination in combination with speed. I switch to flat-foot because it helps me get better scores overall. I'm not sure where my feet are when I hit the arrows now. A lot of people around me play in the style of "California Flatfoot" (inside sensors only). I started in a style that was dubbed "Chicago Flatfoot" because a lot of people around here flatfooted the same way as me... you just... started flatfooting. Not the inside sensors, just the same way as it was done with toes.

I flatfoot now, and I use the bar. I never used the use the bar, and I would not recommend it for beginning or intermediate players. I'm at a level right now where use of the bar, in combination with flatfoot, is the only way to improve my skill. And, come on. Can you argue with that score up there?

Yeah, I guess if you're doing bar-raper-songs, toes would be kind of silly.

I have some really lightweight skate shoes that are completely flat on the bottom with so-so grip. I can move around in them really well and my legs never get tired. Although when it comes to walking on wet floors and tiles, I need to grab a wall or something because my feet become nearly frictionless lol..

I've never understand how that girl that shows on DDR game covers actually dances with those big heeled shoes that she always wears.

That's still a mystery to me.

She's supposed to be club girl. The style of songs on DDR could easily be heard in nightclubs.

So do people with bigger shoes actually play better at DDR? I mean they don't have to move as much from what I've seen. When I first played DDR, my shoe size wasn't big at all and pressing from one arrow to another was like crossing the Grand Canyon. So I was moving all over the place and my stamina dropped at a huge rate.

Now that I've grown and my shoe size increased, stepping on those arrows isn't as difficult anymore. I admit that experience takes most of the credit, but does the shoe size factor into this?

LOL, wear clown shoes and you'll only have to shift your weight around.

Hmm... hard to find a nice pair of those nowadays. Well there's Ebay, but I'm not going that far just to see if they actually work.

Not to discourage you, but bridging is really hard to do well. Even the best players (better than me) have trouble bridging effectively. You're better off playing California Flatfoot than bridging.

nforcer: DDR perf is somewhere between ITG Excellent and ITG Fantastic, pretty close to exactly in between them actually.

ITG basically uses SM timing windows.

I used to be really picky about the shoes I played DDR in. Now that I don't play as much, I don't really care. Running shoes (trainers, not spikes haha) are usually the best if you're going to play something that's hard for you. They're light, and they're small. If you can handle what you're playing easily, it shouldn't really matter.

Ow, when I play in smaller shoes that I normally wear they do torture on your feet. Sure it seems to hold out on the first few songs, but just like a trap it gets you at the worst time like in the middle of a 10 foot song.

Are there shoes out there that have an actual flat bottom with no grooves in it or anything like that? I've noticed how your shoes adds dirt to the tiles no matter how clean they are. Possibly caused by dirt in those grooves, which make the tiles all slippery.

I wonder how such a shoe like that would do in DDR.

Just use a running shoe, like I said. If the pad is dirty, ask an employee for some cleaning fluid and paper towels / cloth. If you dry it thoroughly, the grip is amazing.
