I personally view lifting as a video game.

being stronger just feels amazing. like enabling the option to fly on a video game when you previously couldn't.

    you can just *do* more.

can't you do the same damage to your muscles with that weight, granted it would take more reps?
you can do damage to your muscles at any weight

are you likely to? no, unless you're deadlifting/squatting with horrible form, or benching with ... really really really bad form

can we talk about volume vs intensity?
what in particular do you want to know?

i didn't mean like injury damage... but like the muscle fibers. you have to tear them for them to grow...

i've always been told its about form and not weight you are moving. i have very good form with my exercises so i'm just wondering that would lifting a weight i feel comfortable with until i can't push it anymore... would that be the same as trying to push some crazy weight around? idk if i can phrase this correctly.

and which would be more beneficial for adding size?
does one require more caloric intake?

Well, progressive overload is what makes you stronger as I'm sure you know, but you can't just keep doing more reps if you want to build strength. Eventually the weight is too light and doesn't tax the appropriate muscle fibers.

That would be like saying, can you get huge just doing bodyweight pushups, or get big legs just from running. Of course you can't. If anything, beyond a point your muscles are probably going to shrink if you keep upping the repetitions because larger muscles are inefficient at extremely high reps.

I don't see a point to rep ranges higher than 20 reps if you're training for strength. You should be increasing the weight long before that point.

Volume is absolutely a key to gaining size, which is basically the weight you're lifting multiplied by how many repetitions you do. More volume, more size, but you need to combine that with progressive overload too.

The easiest way to do it is to pick a number of reps you want to do for an exercise, e.g. 8, and then shoot for 10 repetitions with training. Once you hit 10 repetitions, add 5 lbs to the exercise.

Some people get big lifting heavy weight at a small number of repetitions, others do it lifting lighter at higher repetitions. Some use both methods. It doesn't really matter, both work if you do sufficient volume, but you definitely need to add weight to the bar either way.

You guys are right, I didn't really set a goal, I just did what I could every week. Gotta change that.

Re: What does the average guy lift? HOW MANY PEOPLE EVEN LIFT ANYWAY?

If you bench 8-10 @ 135 lbs, start training with 140 lbs next time you're in the gym. If you hit a set @ 10 repetitions, finish your sets and next time you go to the gym train with 145 lbs.

              Repeat indefinitely.

Apply that to all of your lifts.

Training is easy. Diet is slightly more complicated.

                  Yeah.

If you're working out chest structure it like:

                  3x8 Flat Bench @ 140 lbs.

And then do an accessory like 4x10 incline dumbbell press or 4x10 cable fly.

Then do whatever the rest of your workout is (you should have a pre-programmed schedule with sufficient volume).

Workout two would ideally look like 3x9 Flat Bench @ 140 lbs.

                  Workout three, 3x10 Bench @ 140 lbs

                  Workout four: 3x8 @ 145 lbs

                  Etc.

Eventually you won't be able to gain a repetition each workout, though that depends a lot on how frequently you're training and how much you're eating too. On a bulk I was able to maintain this structure pretty consistently until I hit around 185x8 but, it's going to vary from person to person based on genetics, height, weight, etc. Once you get into the 185-225 range it typically gets exponentially harder to progress and then in the 225 + range progress is usually very slow.

Almost always has something to do with not eating correctly/enough when the weight is that low.

So I should expect little to no gains at all without proper diet?
