Question graphics help

how do yall make nice text on graphics. could someone give me some tips. i use gimp and i know the basics of making graphics but I don't know how to make good text like on simifile bg and banners.

usually you want to start by picking a typeface that 1) is not comic sans and 2) fits the look and purpose of what you're making.

then you'll pick the size and color, use nice round colors, not just random colors that you mouse over and click.

after that, type out what you wanna say, and kern the letters/words accordingly, so that it looks real nice

and lastly, just mess around with text effects. i'm not familiar with GIMP but it must have some "outer glow", "drop shadow", and "gradient overlay" settings or something.

just mess around, see at what works and what doesn't, look at examples, and practice

It depends on what the graphics are that you're putting it over, and the mood you want to convey. If you make it too graphical in itself, then it won't be very readable. You also need it to punch out from the background; in some cases, the more generic techniques like strokes are a very easy way to make the fill portion of the text punch out, but a hard shadow, or just simple good looking text can stand out on it's own.
