Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
args are fun. That's the only reason we need.
This has been going on since April 1st, and then officially on the 2nd. It's a giant marketing ploy but it's loads of fun anyways.

Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
sure is ignorance in this thread
anyway, just to sort some stuff out: the idea of an ARG whooshed so hard above dark's head that it's not even funny. suspension of disbelief, my friend. potatoes are no longer necessary. there is already enough 'electrical power'. that's why this phase of the game started. people just have to have a game from the list currently running to 'generate CPU power' for GlaDOS. things are still in the air, but if they manage to get enough copies of these games to run at the same time, portal 2 will be released early. this whole thing not only functions as a form of pre-release entertainment, but also to help market the games in the po(r)ta(l)t(w)o pack. i really don't know why so many people in this thread have to be so condescending. also, people apparently hit fictional arrows on a screen that really have no bearing on real life. what has gaming become. Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
I'm still confused as to what this thread is about. Where are people getting the idea of potatoes from?

Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
It all started from the recently-released Potato Pack for Steam, which was a collection of a few indie games being resold as a discount bundle. This turned out to be the basis of the ARG, with hints strewn across all of the games as well as in many online and real life locations. For the specifics, check the wiki, but now it's all culminating in everyone having to keep this set of games running to possibly get the game released earlier. From a marketing standpoint, it's pretty amazing, as they were able to garner a decent amount of hype while utilizing far less advertisement costs.

Are these ARG's time-based? As in, if you start now, are there things you can no longer get? Do you have to spend money?

After Portal 2 is released you can't get any more potatoes I think.
btw anything that requires skill or effort to acquire has value just sayin

Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
You can still get anything that was gotten in the very beginning of the ARG, which are the various potatoes that can be gotten throughout the games in the pack. Getting them all apparently gets some kind of special item, but it requires you to own all of the games in the pack (which everyone who wanted all of the potatoes would have had to have done anyway). All of the legwork of figuring out the potato locations (and their resulting passwords) is done though, which was really the most awesome part. Just to be clear, though, you don't need to own all of the games in the pack to have fun with the ARG. The only part that sucks though is that everyone figured out everything already.

Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
Personally, I'm not super excited for Portal 2. The first game was fun, and the second looks amazing and I'd love to play it... but where in the world is my flippin Half Life 2 ep. 3?!?!?!?

Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
Great marketing ploy to sell games other than Portal2.
Anyone and everyone who is participating in this would have already bought Portal 2 without question, but would not have bought said potato pack of games. fanboydom of it all is pretty lame though, believe it or not, you can wait for this game to come out. |

Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
It's a great marketing idea with lots of utility -- it's just not for me. I don't like the idea that I have to buy more games to participate.

I'm all for puzzles -- I *love* puzzles. But not if I have to buy shit to access them.

Also, 1 game has full status. It seemed to cut 50 minutes from the original time. I'm getting more and more stoked for this. I've been playing lots of Audio Surf since that's the only game from the potato pack I own. I'm putting my 2 cents worth in. |

Re: Portal 2 ARG - Possible release within 14 hours!
50 minute cut was kind of a let down, but it's still fun.
Also Rubix, you own some of these games already don't you? Amnesia, Supermeatboy,...
