The game needs songs of all difficulties. There are people of all skill levels here. I think the news item was right that many of the SOTWs lately have been on the hard side. According to my spreadsheet, out of the last ~1 month of songs that haven't been added into the ordered list in jimerax's actual difficulty thread yet, the breakdown is as follows:

1 song at difficulty 2
1 song at difficulty 3
1 song at difficulty 5
2 songs at difficulty 6
2 songs at difficulty 7
6 songs at difficulty 9
1 song at difficulty 10 (Ride Out, token 19)
1 song at difficulty 11 (K8107, 40k secret apparently, but in Funk for now)
1 song at difficulty 12

If you halve the 12 point scale, 11 songs are in the harder half, and 5 are in the easier half. If you break it in thirds, 2 songs are in the easiest third, 5 songs are in the middle third, and 9 songs are in the hardest third. Roughly 2/3 of the songs are in the hardest half of the scale, and a bit over 1/2 of the songs are in the hardest third of the scale. If you omit this weekend's releases at difficulties 5 and 6, you'll see that an even higher fraction of the recent songs (before this weekend) are on the harder side -- about 3/4 in the hardest half and near 2/3 in the hardest third.

I think this shows that recent songs have mostly been harder songs, and that it's reasonable to expect some easier songs would come along to help balance that out. If you don't like the easier songs, don't play them. Or just play them once or a few times to get a score/rank/FC/PC or whatever you're typically shooting for, and then don't play them anymore. Remember that not everyone is a master player, and there are people who really need easier songs like these.

also... you do have to remember that 95% of the stepfile artists are also in the top 5% of players, if not top 1%. so to them, a file worth making needs to be at least an 8 or a 9... otherwise it isn't "fun" for them. which is why we wind up with so many harder files and not many easier files.

the flipside of the coin is... the stepfile artists that aren't that good TRY to make harder files. it is harder to make a hard file than an easy file. more notes, trickier patterns, etc etc. almost EVERY file that is a 6 or less gets accepted. that goes to show just how few submissions of Tricky or easier we get. about 1 out of 20 or 30. if that.
