to be or not to be...
How do you covince an athiest or even a Nihilist (the actual philosphy, not the idiotic misconception most people have) not to kill themselves. I personally think there's no argument against it. Unless you can convince them by playing on their own inculcated beleifs, there is no real injustification in killing yourself. I just satisfy myself with the pre-meditated ideal that life is going to have it's ups and downs and I might as well live it through for the ups. Shakespear said in Hamlet that we are afraid to kill ourselves, no matter what we beleive, because of the fundamental uncertainty that comes with death. This is a rather bleak topic. Anyways, what do other people think about all this. ...Or would you rather not?

you tell them to stop being a pussy.. and stop trying to take the easy way out of things.. everyone has problems ( i know some are worse than others) but we all live through them (except the idiots who kill themselves) .. i guess just tell him what he has to look forward too.. friends and things that bring good thoughts to mind.. i dont know.. im not the best person to talk to about suicide.. especially if you want me to help someone not do it..

oh.. well in that case.. you don't.. i don't really believe in god.. or have any religous beliefs, im an evolutionist.. i think evolution is the reason we are here now.. but about the suicide with the atheist... its basically a respect thing.. you would have to conveince them that killing themself would end there problems, but would create much more problems with there friends and family.. by killing themself the are being selfish and are hurting many others... again.. this is off the top of my head.. not really critically thinking about it..

I'd let them. The vast majority of atheists I've come across are truly miserable. Sure, they might be happy, but they've never experienced true joy.
If they are really so depressed they want to take their own life, I'm not sure there is a reason to stop them.

Well you're assuming that the only reason one wouldn't kill themselves is because of religious beliefs. I'm an athiest as well, I don't believe in heaven or hell or god, so by your definition there's no reason not to kill myself. I might be wrong, but I don't think that's the reason most (religious) people don't commit suicide. If you're truely that depressed, chances are you're not thinking of god when you...off yourself, so to speak.

well.. it depends on how religious you are... if shits real bad... and you believe in god... then you will turn to him for guidance instead of suicide.. if shit gets worse.. you might ask again... if shit gets even worse your probably going forget the whole religion thing and kill yourself.. but every person is different so handling this would be different for every person

I have two replies to this topic.
1: Philosopher's Reply: I think therefore I am. I am therefore I think. I think therefore I think I am. I think therefore I am I think. I think I am therefore I think I am. I think I am therfore I am I think. I think I think I am therefore I think. THEREFORE I AM CRAZY 2:Religious Guy Reply: "When I was a little kid, I wanted a bicycle soo much that I prayed to the Lord every day that I would get one. Then I realized that the Lord didn't work this way, so I stole one asked him to forgive me." -[Forgot Who Said This] |

lol omeganitros..
anyway back to the topic at hand, I've tried commiting suicide, and my life flashed before my eyes every damn time, which is the only reason I'm still here. tell the person to imagine what it would like for their friends and loved ones, I thought about that the final time I tried to commit suicide and I haven't tried again. sometimes your friends/family can save your life in more ways then one.. I'd say more but I'm in the middle of first period: earth science.

It is not considered smart to say "Every one in group x* does y" or "all x's are y". Its rather ignorant. Your assuming that because of there believes (or lack there of), they are less desirving of life. You do not need a god to enjoy yourself, sometimes it is beter without. For example Your relijon would say something is evil but I think its ok so I do it anyway without guilt. For example porn. *Im using x as a virable, not talking about theese guys |

Nice answers coming from the Athiests, or at least the modest Christians. Laharl...you dissapoint me. DrLZRDMN, I didn' tknow Group X were Athiests? XD OT: I bet you there isn't 4 people out of 5 who have 'tried' to kill themselves, and still most of them think they are one in a million.
