What's with the hostility towards Christians?
Lately, it seems to be getting more and more popular to blatantly attack the Christian faith. Now here on ffr have yet to see this happen so I am NOT talking about any of you.
These attacks usually consist of talking quotes from the bible and using them out of context. Here is an example: http://rwor.org/a/1270/bible-quotes.htm If not that it, is usually just spouting nonsensical, anti religious speeches that really , when it comes down to it childish and full of gaping holes. EX:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRVUlIz_ruE I guess what I would like to know is why? what's the reason for all this? all I would like is an explanation, I believe these people are within their full rights to free speach when they say these things, and I don't want to insult anyone. |

Re: What's with the hostility towards Christians?
I myself am a christian and that story you linked to is outrageous.
the bible is not a book of rules that you must live by. the only 'rules' that we must follow are those of the ten commandments. all the other parts of the bible are all stories, yes they are true, and thats the way things were back then, the bible is not encouraging us to kill kids who swear. Hentai: i would like it if you stopped referring to christians as a whole. there are christians out there who take the bible WAY too seriously, answering every question with some quote from the bible, living 'perfect' lives and think theyre above everyone else. I personally think that is wrong. there are different types of christians but the main thing we have in common is that we believe in christ. the other stuff that happens depends on the actual person, not the religion. TATOR TOT: you pretty much summed it up perfectly.

Allow me to tell you a quick story. I work at a movie theatre, and last week we had the movie Knowing. A lady had come up and asked me my opinion on the movie, and I told her it was good but that I found the ending to be a little wierd. She came back after the movie saying "So you found the end of the movie wierd?", to which I replied "Yes, the whole alien thing was a little wierd to me." Upon my saying that, she launched into a whole rant on how they weren't aliens, but angels, and that the children were the only ones saved because they were innocent, and that if I didn't believe that I would burn in hell when the rapture came. I explained to her that I understood her view, as I was raised on the bible, but that that was not how I saw it, upon which she went on ranting. So I told her to leave. People like that are one of the many reasons that Christians have such a bad reputation. |

given that Christianity is the biggest religion in the world still and a vast majority of the USA it must be awfully hard to feel persecuted

Re: What's with the hostility towards Christians?
Probably because religion is a joke and the bible is completley out of context within itself.

Re: What's with the hostility towards Christians?
Christianity has been attacked on FFR many times before.
I think a good reason why is because the Christian faith is offensive to anyone who doesn't accept that they are going to judged for their sins and go to hell. If one chooses not to believe in Christ and follow his ways, they're going to Hell because they have sinned (which is turning away from god's commandments which is the same as not choosing to do what we know is right because God's law is in our hearts) and on Judgement Day God judges us acording to our deeds. But Jesus paid the price of our sins for those that believe in him, and will be made right in God's eyes. Also the Christian belief is higher than any other in the whole world so it's even easier to attack Christians.

I really don't understand how grown intellectual people believe in a mystical man in the sky. Probably either because they fear death and want there to be more after that or it's something their parents told them to believe and they still do or they're just following the norm, since it's still the majority.

Hey, most of the atheists who try to argue against the bible have no idea what they're talking about so it's not like it'd be hard for you Christians to win the argument.

Re: What's with the hostility towards Christians?
Quote:
On a day-to-day basis, when confronted with new information, we decide for ourselves the validity of it. If we find it to be true beyond a reasonable doubt, we define such information as knowledge (there is no such thing as true knowledge, as we can't be sure of anything). All religions have a common thought pattern. When someone accepts that they can believe in a religion, they are placing the status of knowledge upon something which does not have enough validity to be escalated to that status. This is unintelligent by definition. It is detrimental to your ability to operate in daily life. ESP, for example, is an unintelligent thing to place a lot of merit in. There is a man, whose name I forget, who has publicly offered one million dollars to anyone who can display supernatural abilities. No one has come close. This effectively limits the plausibility of the existence of ESP to near 0, close enough that I can say I "know" it does not exist. Christianity, by example, is an unintelligent thing to place a lot of merit in. Every claim that its text makes does not have a scrap of real world evidence to claim it. Several of its claims - in fact, pretty much any that can be counterclaimed - can be proven wrong. The lifespan of the world. The existence of Jesus Christ. Noah's ark. Wrong beyond a reasonable doubt. You're probably itching for the quote button, but on an individual level, I don't care how stupid people are. If someone wants to make dumb decisions for themselves, I don't care. Where it begins to become a problem is where it affects me on a large-scale basis. People's beliefs and morals affect their attitudes and decisions. For example, religion tends to be joined with conservative ideals. And since we live in a democracy, I needn't demonstrate that when a large amount of people have sway on my life, and their belief system is flawed and illogical, they have lots of chances to affect my life in a counterproductive way. I do not like that people with corrupt views are changing my life for the worse. Furthermore, it's a self-replicating virus. Parents teach their children. Crazies try to recruit other people. IQ can be manipulated and I don't like when people are damaging it intentionally. People who could be spending their time on Earth contributing to its development and benefiting it are instead damaging it and holding it back. Understand?

Re: What's with the hostility towards Christians?
dore, you fail. I think a lot of people look at religion the wrong way. Religion is ridiculous. Period. Does that mean there is no God. No. Personally, I believe that there may be something, far beyond anything we understand out there. perhaps, we will find it one day, and we will understand. Maybe there isn't. However, religion is a simply the link between humans, and whatever we think may be out there. There is no need to make up stories, there is no need to preach. There's no point in trying to prove to someone that there is or isn't a God, or that there are or aren't aliens. I'm with a lot of other people when I say that religion is just a form of mind control. However, the idea that we should be nice to each other, respect each other, not go out and kill each other. These are good principles. Shouldn't need a book to tell us that. The idea that there may be something else out there, sure. Take that, "something else", and put it into whatever form you want. Making a club, and telling everyone you have the answers when you're just as clueless as the rest of the world.....that......that is why people hate religion.
