thanks rayword for the title idea

INSTEAD, I'm just gonna listen to albums posted in this thread in rough order. https://rateyourmusic.com/~contrapatior here's my rym for an idea of what I like and don't like. I'm pretty open to most music though gimme good shit that I haven't heard yet, gimme good shit that's probably in my backlog, gimme shit shit that I'm gonna hate, gimme meme music bye Last edited by choof; 11-5-2017 at 12:54 PM.. |

Re: not a single review done
looked up all three of the artists on rym just to look at genres, went with this one since it said that sayCeT produces idm !!!
so the first track, 15, hits and I'm kinda excited for the rest of the album. glitchy goodness and the synths he uses are cute. unfortunately, the second track, and quite a few tracks actually, encorporate vocals. I'm not against music with singing in general, but when it comes to glitchy, idm-esque albums, I'm not too fond of them. I personally think they detract from the glitchy aesthetics. using vocals, a listener is automatically gonna be focusing on them, and everything else just ends up being... well, background music? that probably sounds demeaning or something, but that's just how it is. it also doesn't help that the girl singing on a majority of the tracks doesn't have a particularly standout voice. which is fine I suppose, but eh. now, I will say, that in the sections on tracks that use vocals as samples, those are the more interesting bits. the breathy ambient vocals in Easy, Opal, Sunday Morning, are all more interesting than the sung parts of other tracks. his synth patches are what ultimately end up being the best thing about the album; a lot of the synths have a wintery (frosty?) feeling to them. Daddy Walks Under The Snow was a pretty great track, probably the coolest (literally) track on the album. this one ended up sounding a lot like edm/chillwave stuff with a bit more emphasis on glitch. it was an alright listen! there's one review on rym for this album, and I think I'd agree. the singing isn't anything to write home about, but it's a gentle breath of fresh(mint) air. 3/5 |

Re: not a single review done
alright, I was kinda excited to listen to this, given how well received and reviewed their music is on rym. I know that the lead singer passed away recently, which put them on a lot of people's radars, it seems. I believe you told me that they're super popular in canada, but never were quite able to break out and go international.
I will say it here. the vocals. not a fan. at first I didn't know what it was about the vocals that were offputting, but I saw a review on rym that made it click for me: these guys sound a lot like REM. and I've never really been a fan of REM either. whenever the vocals aren't being slightly annoying, they're merely okay. the instrumentation is okay. the songwriting is okay. I didn't catch much of the lyrics, because of what I think of the vocals, but given the vocal style and the plain-jane approach to rock here, I will assume that the lyrics are a main selling point. sure enough, a quick glance over lyric sheets on genius (lol I know) shows me that lyrics are what keep the songs interesting. maybe it's just how I like my music, but I've never really put too much thought into lyrics. it's really a case of in one ear and out the other. so this album is not for me. this may sound kinda counter-intuitive; I don't think it's a bad album, I understand why people like it, but I don't like listening to it. I was going to listen to one of their later albums to see if they came into their own, but rym shows a steady decline in ratings from their early stuff to their newer stuff. and I'm not curious enough about the band to look much further into their discog. 3/5 |

Chinese Football - Chinese Football (Math Rock)
Tyler, the Creator - Flower Boy (Hip Hop) Ten Sleep - No Place Like House (Indie Rock) By the way I didn't mention it in the thread but I really dug your Ravel Sonatine loop, love that piece and it was well done in a different context.

Re: not a single review done
pretty standard shoegaze, some chords definitely sound very VERY mbv inspired. there were a few spots where I was immediately reminded of loveless. which I suppose isn't a terrible thing, since loveless is really good and these guys do shoegaze really well. what I do like is that the vocals aren't coated in effects most of the times, it's actually pretty easy to discern what he's singing.
Redder is a notable track imo, the vocals aren't discernable but the track is super upbeat and much faster than anything else on the album... I think. the unfortunate thing about bands who borrow heavily from other shoegaze bands is that they eventually just sound like a mishmash of their contemporaries. which again, isn't a bad thing, especially if you just love the vibe of shoegaze and dream pop and associated styles that use the hazy, distorted formula. but it ultimately leaves the album sounding like background, mood music. but hey, at least this is good. I will definitely be listening to this again though, because it's free (technically pay what you want). that's pretty great! this doesn't sound at all like a hobbyist band, it does the shoegaze aesthetic well enough. 3.5/5 |

Re: not a single review done
knowing the title of the album, and the cover art, I was expecting something super experimental, like some lowercase or tape music or something, but goddamn. I was greeted by some pretty great microhouse. I love the vibe that this gives off. honestly the only microhouse artist I can name off the top is Four Tet, and I know he was making stuff in the early 2000s (Rounds was 2003). my first thoughts about this album was that this sounded a lot like Four Tet but with a darker, more ethereal approach to sound, but then I remembered that I was thinking about that in the context of later Four Tet projects. so I suppose Four Tet sounds like this guy rofl.
I'm also picking up hints of Pop by Gas as well, and it sounds like this loop based style would be used later on in uk garage and early dubstep. so yeah, this is good. it has a very relaxing vibe, it gets me tapping my foot, bobbing my head. I don't really have much to say about the sound, maybe because I just woke up and am listening to it while I have some tea. I really enjoy the lo-fi samples, and some of the grooves are... groovy. that weird filtered wooshy thing on They, Them makes that one of my favorite tracks, and the slower beat on Drift makes it a great closing track. I think my least favorite tracks are ones like Moire, the ones that barely have a beat and remind me the most of Pop. overall, a really great listen and I'll be listening to this quite often I think. at least for the next month or so before I move to something else. 4/5 |

but november? WHO DAT BOY? I AIN'T GOT TIME!? GARDEN SHED? holy moly, garden shed is good. one of my favorite tracks off wolf was the one where he was talking about his dad, because I could relate to it and I thought it was one of the most emotional things he's ever rapped about, but goddamned garden shed is, probably, the best thing he's ever done. I Ain't Got Time is so good too, I'm likely going to make a chart for it. the start says "god I love this sample" and I agree. a$ap rocky on who dat boy is great too. I really hope that his next album is as good, and more conceptual, and flows a bit better. but this is his best album. I never would have believed someone if they told me tyler would be doing stuff like this only a few years after wolf. 4/5 Last edited by choof; 11-7-2017 at 12:03 PM.. |

Awesome that you dug this one so much. I listened to some Tyler before this album but this is the first that I've really fucked with. I think See You Again is far and away the best track, and I can't say Garden Shed is a favorite off the album though it is still a good song. Interesting that we can have such differing opinions on the same music but still ultimately like it!
