Default Benefits System in America?

I'm curious and as most of you guys are American, could help me out and explain stuff.

Basically, my partner works and I'm a Stay at home Mum. Because of the wage he earns (below a certain amount a year) here in the UK you can get such things as Working tax credits/Child Tax Credits etc. basically money off the government to help you along if your wage is shit, to help towards bills/food/basic living.
You can also get Child Benefit, which everyone is entitled to from the poor to millionaires (although this is changing to only people who earn X amount)

Does America have a system like this? Do you get help with Children and if you're suddenly not in work etc.?

Everyone complains that the UK is "too generous" because people can have a house where the rent is paid for them and can live a lifestyle without working.

How does it work with you?

Ahh right, I always thought it was really strict over there and not that many benefits were available.

How shit is shit? Are you literally scraping the barrel?

Also, do people over there take the piss and play the system and flat out refuse to work and help themselves?
(This topic has come up in a group I'm in on FB, so became curious how it worked other places lol)

Thanks! I have tried to look it up, but it makes no sense to me unless I actually ask.

you'd be living with barely enough food to get by and the housing locations are . playing the system isnt really to your benefit that i know of at least. i mean you can cut some corners and get some help but as far as not working at all and living a semi decent life is impossible as far as i know.

Which is basically set up that way intentionally, considering the government doesn't want the whole population living comfortably at their expense. It's made to motivate those who are in that position to work to get out of it.
