Talk about windows 10 here. Such as any issues you are facing or programs you've found to be incompatible. Edit: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10 Click here and use this if windows is not giving you the option to update. Last edited by Izzy; 07-29-2015 at 11:22 PM.. |

Re: Windows 10
I made a few big ass posts on facebook about my experience upgrading and my first thoughts. I've been gone all day working but I will say that I'm very impressed by Windows 10. Nadella said maybe last year or so that Microsoft loves Linux, and the new features in Windows 10 make it apparent that they are trying to bridge the gap between Linux and Windows communities, and interoperability. Resource management, a command line pseudo-package manager, new scripting capabilities, multiple desktops: it's very apparent that these were included specifically for dual-boot Linux users.
I'm especially excited for Server 2016, I thought Server 2012 was great and a lot of the features from 2012 are expanded on in 2016, including improved virtualization in the form of Hyper-V. WE'RE GETTING NATIVE CONTAINERS AND CLUSTERING, SON. As far as general usage goes, the GUI looks really great. The start menu works really well, and it even looks good, a very solid step "back" in terms of user friendliness. The minimal theme works well. Microsoft Edge, aka "IE but totally not IE," is actually a great browser. It has no addon or extension support as of now though, so if you browse using things like Greasemonkey and Ad-Block Plus, you'll be sticking with Firefox until later on. I only have a few issues so far. Cortana isn't actually all that great; it was touted as Microsoft's answer to Siri, but she doesn't actually talk. I know that may not sound very important, but trust me, Apple did the "robot secretary" thing right by giving her a voice. This is a large one, but there isn't too much transparency when installing Windows 10 when it comes to data collection (or privacy). When finally getting to the user prompted portion of the install, you can select the default settings, or you can hunt on the screen for the option to customize settings. If you care to do so, I would recommend changing all privacy options to minimize data collection. Microsoft will still do some data collection, you didn't read the Privacy Statement but accepted it anyway so they're legally allowed to, but they give you the options to minimize. If you're really really paranoid about Microsoft tracking your doujin downloads, do some snooping around in the registry to disable it completely, or use a VPN without logs. It's that simple. And here's something I'm sure people will be happy about. If you don't like Windows 10, you have a month to rollback to your prior OS, whether that was 7 or 8.1, for free. But overall, I think it's a great step forward for Microsoft. It's better than Windows 7 in all areas other than customization (theming, making your computer look like a hotdog stand, etc), and it's better than Windows 8 in all areas. |

Re: Windows 10
There were so many things they wanted access to just to enable Cortana. I did it just to try it out, but I agree Cortana seems rather lame. You can actually get her to say a limited number of things such as the weather. It uses the same voice as Cortana from halo.
I am probably going to just disable all that stuff again because it isn't useful to me. |

Re: Windows 10
i still haven't been able to get my upgrade... just waiting patiently.
although w10 has a bunch of features that i really don't care about, i'd be happy to just have a start menu again. idk i'll post more thoughts when i actually get it, if i ever do that is at this rate lmao

Re: Windows 10
Yeah, I think Cortana was a good idea but it was implemented correctly. I'm not sure what the general consensus was, but I know that personally I was expecting a robotic voice akin to Cortana from the Halo series (HENCE THE NAME) reading pornhub comments for me and not feeling any remorse.

Re: Windows 10
This is what my start menu looks like at the moment. I don't care at all for the tiles so I'm glad I can remove them all.

Re: Windows 10
I've been exploring the Xbox app because once upon a time I used to use that shit a lot.
Went through a lot of memories just browsing it, and I'm happy that they actually have a party chat system where I can make one and someone on Xbox One or something can join in. That's pretty fucking neat to be honest. Now time to see if I can just somehow join a party of people I haven't spoken to in years to pop up. Apparently my Xbox Live account is still Gold status even though nothing has been paying for it for the past four to five years. It's also eleven years old. At this point I'm just assuming Microsoft has given my account perm Gold or something because lol.

Re: Windows 10
How long do Win7/8.1 users have for the free upgrade? Was it a year?
I think I'm going to wait until near the end of that period to see how everything shakes out, because at the moment there is literally nothing wrong with 7 for me. If 10 does wind up having no compatibility issues, no crippling bugs, and customization options are developed for it, then I will totally get it.

Re: Windows 10
Yes, you have 1 year to freely update to Win10. I've heard that the rollback feature of Win10 back to your previous OS works well though.

Steam was actually just down for a 15 min or so maintenance.
Also part of the Win 10 crew now. |
