The PS3 doesn't even have a prototype as far as I know. It's still in the development stage, and I doubt anyone has played it as of yet. Perhaps you're thinking of the PSX, a home theater system that has a PS2 built into it, and can do other crap that no one cares about.

In the U.S., the PS3 is scheduled to come out most likely in 2006, probably late in the year. it has been said that it could come out in late 2005, but no one's really sure yet. Most of the next gen consoles will come out in 2006, the next Nintendo, Xbox2, and the PS3.

Based on the cyclical history of video game console developing we won't see the next systems until at least 2005. Through historical notation, a company will wait 5-6 years before releasing a new system.
PSX 1995 --> PS2 2000
NES 1985 --> SNES 1991 --> N64 1996 --> GCN 2001
The big three have just recently announced r&d plans for future systems and haven't even come to specs or prototypes yet. You are realistically looking at another 2, 3 - possibly 4 - years before we see another next-gen system.
What you could be thinking of - PSX, to be released sometime soon; PSP, formal images have just been released recently to show the proposed cosmetics of the portable system - still no known working prototype.

It's gonna be a rough two years for these set of consoles, especally Nintendo, having drained their top titles onto the market already.

The PS2 is getting old, and the Xbox is... well... the Xbox is there.

Dude, don't mock the X-Box. It is the best damn doorstop/paperweight I've ever owned.
Plain and simple, the industry will dive into another recession (perhaps even crash) if the next three systems are what the kids call "teh sUx0rZ." If they don't do it right this next time, the term "Game Over" might hold a new meaning.
