MORE UNFORESEEN POSTER TIME! (I'm sure you all remember that last time... uh, yeah... >_> )

Well, now that the first episode of Mai-Otome has been aired in Japan and the manga has been running since August, I think it's worthy of a topic. (Not that I've seen/read them yet... eh... )

ANN doesn't have too much on this yet aside from staff and vocal cast, but here is a thread with a good amount of info: http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=38083. (There are also some nice pictures from magazine scans, here: http://www.animepaper.net/scans/Mai-Otome/.)

It's an indirect sequel to Mai-HiME. A few of Mai-HiME's characters are returning, but appear to have changed quite a bit... for example, apparently, Mikoto is a cat. XD

Keep an eye out for subs... they should be coming soon. >.<

I just watched the raw of the first episode.

This series is going to be unbelievably awesome.

And most of the main characters of Mai HiME will be showing up. Thus far we have seen, either somewhere in the first episode or in the OP, Natsuki, Shizuru, Akane, Shiho, Nao, Miyu, MikotoCat, Haruka, Fumi, Mashiro, Yukariko, Aoi, and Chie.

Mai, Yukino, Midori and Alyssa have not made any appearances at this point.

Oh, and this series is going to rock. I'm preparing myself for another wild wide.

Awesome is one of the many ways I can say this show is. I just finished it, and if you haven't seen Mai HiME, go watch it before this. I particularly like the guest apperances, as well as the first episode theory showing that the show hasn't changed direction, just built what HiME established very well.

I watched the first episode, subbed, last night. Freakin' awesome.

Whee... finally got to see it (obtaining anime while in a dorm is a bit more difficult).

Seems like they're pulling a CLAMP here and reusing all the characters again in an alternate setting. Awesome... all the ones Kefit mentioned, plus the guys. I saw Nagi in the OP, and that guy who always talked to Natsuki by the tree in Mai-HiME (forgot his name -.- ) showed up too. There were also people who looked suspiciously like Tate and Takumi with new hairdos... I've yet to see anyone who resembled Reito/Lord Kakuyo, though.

Haha, it's funny seeing Mashiro so energetic. It seemed weird at first that the episode was so lighthearted, but I remember that Mai-HiME started out that way too. ^^; I hope this story gets really compelling as it progresses, too.

Such an unusual mix of mecha and magical girl... this is going to be awesome.

It is worth noting that the ominous EVIL looking armored man figure at the beginning of the episode (during the 14 years ago segment) is voiced by the same person who voiced Reito in Mai HiME.

I forgot to mention in my last post that Akira has also not appeared in any form.

So are these characters going to show up at all? Who knows. Maybe they will randomly appear when we least expect them. Maybe they will show up in the most mundane way possible (and thus completely surprising us). And maybe Sunrise just wasn't able to secure the VAs for some of those characters for another series.

I suppose we shall just have to wait and see.

I can already tell without even looking it up that Kajiura Yuki is doing the music for this one as well.

Anyway, so far, it seems like the main character is way too hyperactive. She needs to be toned down a bit. I can see why she would be, but it was kind of annoying.

And, while this subber did a decent job, I'd be willing to wait and see if Static is going to pick this up as well.

Yeah, her hyperness seemed like a little too much to me too... I figured it was just because I was used to Mai, though. Well, we'll see.

Oh, and Static is indeed picking this one up. X3 It said somewhere... on their forums maybe. I'll get those eventually for burning purposes, but I can't make myself wait that long to see them when they come out... -.- I was crazy thankful to Yesy for subbing Mai-HiME so quickly when the anxious suspense between episodes reached its height around episode 20 and after.

Also... observing some things. There is another HiME star by the moon, only it's blue this time.

There is an evil-looking person in the OP that looks a lot like Mai... similar hair and eyes from what you can tell, and also has Mai's spinning flame symbol thing (the thing that looks like the Sharingan from Naruto >.> ). They also have the glowy rings around their wrists and ankles, but all of the Otome seem to have a thing like that now. This person's silhouette (in the first OP shot; goes by quickly) also looks a lot like a pheonix... which could signify a rebirth, but it also reminds me of Kagutsuchi. (On another pheonix-y note, it seems all the Otome battle uniforms have some part that looks like pheonix tail feathers. I noticed this when Arika's stone "went off" while they were falling in the episode, but it's even more apparent on Shizuru's uniform. Kind of interesting, seeing as the characters appear to be "reborn" from the last series. ) AAaaand, they are holding a sword that looks like it could be Miroku. I don't have a reference of it handy to compare, but it looks like it to me.

Also, that little birdy on Miyu's hat in the OP might be Alyssa. XD Hey, if Mikoto can be a cat, it's possible... it is yellow and hanging around with Miyu, after all.

Onnnnee more thing. There was a stone that made that guy's eyes turn yellow. Reito had something like that going on as well...

Alright, enough observation/speculation for now. (I loved Mai-HiME for that, and this seems to be just as promising. X3 )

Episode 2 has been subbed, and it is hilarioustastic.

Shiho, Nao, and Chie are all completely and utterly INSANE now, although I suspect that much of that was due to the tone of the episode - I am sure that each of them will be far more sane when it comes time for the show to get serious.

Episode 2 was awesometastic. Seriously. Either episode 3 or 4 is gonna have the first big battle, I'm pretty sure. I know both Nina and Arika are gonna end up going to the school, though.

Also, so far, the only people from the original series not to show up yet are Midori and Mai. Mai's obviously not going to show up for a while, though. She needs to be a villain. That would rule.

Mayhaps we should keep two separate useless lists for this. One for the known characters and the other for characters with scenes so far.

Heh, yeah, I went through obsessively pausing on each micro-scene in the opening to see what I could spot. ^^;

I'm sure they'll all show up eventually. They wouldn't just randomly leave out a few staple characters for no reason.

So, under those two separate lists... where does Fumi fit? She was in the episode, but just as a hologram, and I didn't even notice the first time.

Episode 5 was pretty much filler, but still good.

It wasn't really filler, as several important things happened (Arika recieving Sergei's support, and the revelation of Tomoe).

This episode was kind of a bust for character and relationship development though. Irina was fleshed out a bit, as was Nina and Nao's relationship, but everything else we saw was stuff we had seen in earlier episodes.

Oh dear. Shiho attacks with TENTACLE MONSTERS this time. Too bad she was in crazy voodoo mode this episode though, as that kept her too over the top to give her actual character development.

Everyone else got some nice development though. And Nao is awesome. And scary. And she is only the fourth ranked pearl. This only adds to my desire to see Akane, Chie, and Shiho in action.

Judging from the next episode preview, it looks like next week's episode is going to be a serious one - I'm looking forward to it.

Is it just me, or is Miyu's voice different? I haven't heard her original voice in a while, so I could be wrong... but it didn't sound quite right to me.

And whee, so Otome are still forced against one another, just like the good ol' HiME days. That's what made such great drama in the first one, and it did appear to be a repeating cycle, so it's good to see they aren't straying from that in Otome. You just know it's going to get really interesting again.

Well, episode 13 was not the sub-climax, although it looks like 14 or 15 will be. The way they ended the episode didn't seem quite as effective as blowing up a nearby bridge in terms of how cool it looked, but it still peaked my interest enough to make me want the next episode.

This show needs to get moving, and fast.

It started out promising, but it is dragging pretty badly now. Stuff needs to happen, and the show needs to decide which characters are important. Character focus has been so inconsistent for everyone aside from Arika/Nina/Mashiro/Sergey that I have no idea anymore who is significant to this story, and who isn't.

I've heard rumors that, based on the episode title, episode 18 is going to be an OH **** episode, but I hope the kick this show needs comes sooner than that.

Yay, stuff is finally happening!

The pacing of this show is one of my biggest gripes with it. HiME took until episode 15 for the subclimax to hit, and that was also quite late (HiME is saved in my eyes for having far better character balance and focus in its first half). It looks like the subclimax in this show is going to be in 17 or 18, which is really stretching it. I'm certain the show will be excellent from here on until the end, but I think it took a few too many episodes to get here.

And the new OP is layl. The song doesn't do much for me, and I think the video footage used for it has been created to mislead us as much as possible. I will say that most of the new meister robe designs shown in it are absolutely wretched >_>

On-topic, 16 was supawexome and like everyone else said, I can't wait for the explosion next week. The new OP took me by surprise... I like how it starts for some reason, nicely blending with the episode.

I like how they ditched the crappy intro for a better one and kept the awesome ending.

Most animes will ditch the ending for a new one at 13 and replace both for the second season at 27 (if it goes that far).

It's a shame that pretty much everything spoilerific was rather obvious, although I still believe that Mashiro is the real queen. Rena could have pulled off some elaborate switch way back then. I do wonder why Nagi is actually actively taking an antagonist role this time around. I figured his sole purpose in the Mai universes was to annoy Mashiro and cause a general nuisance without being evil per se, but it looks like he's going the bad guy route, especially since an Aswad face turn seems imminent.

Aoi needs to reveal herself as an Otome already.

I also think there's more to the end than what one sees at first glance. Natsuki running into street-clothes Nao for no apparent reason and then them both randomly wandering in on the fight at the end have to be significant at some level, especially since Nao is from Artai and thus would end up fighting for Nagi if she did anything at all. If the presence of a Coral wasn't important they would've used Shiho since she's the only Coral who holds no signifigance (as Chie is tied to Aoi).

I was shaking for a full 5 minutes after watching the raw. Aoi Senoh is my favorite character in any anime since Galaxy Angel's Milfeulle Sakuraba and I got to watch her fall off a cliff in magnificent fashion. You can't just read about this ****, you have to see it for yourself to experience how truly heartwrenching it was (at least for me).

In case you're curious, the image used for the second sponsor segment was the closeup of Aoi's sad smile, which killed me all the more. DoReMi cut it out though.

I am now currently of the hope that Mai saved her. Initially I hoped that Chie would do it but she's back at Windbloom in the preview for the next episode so unless she TIME PARADOX'd it would be impossible for her to be the one responsible. A Mai rescue is certainly not out of the realm of possibilities - we never actually saw Aoi die, she just kind of faded into the night, so someone could've caught her. Also, when Mai landed on the school island in HiME, her first two new friends were Aoi and Chie, so they may get tied together again.

The most sickening thought is that there were no green sparklies, so if Aoi really did die she won't be coming back, I don't even want to consider this possibility, it makes me queasy.

But if you truly are dead, my lovely Miss Aoi Senoh, then - be it permanent or temporary - may you rest in peace. <3

Now on to other not-as-depressing matters. Thanks to Aoi, Mashiro now has the drive to get everything back. She has a reason to go on, and it's pretty obvious she needed one.

Also I'm now about 95% sure Sergay will be dead before Episode 26 (when he'll invariably be DEM'd back to life). Whether by Nagi's hands, Nina's hands, or his own hands, he will die.

That being said, I find myself enjoying the plot of this show quite a bit. And most of the side characters, when they actually get screentime, are awesome. I'm looking forward to the Mikoto screentime next episode.

At this point I think the following is most likely:

Nina is almost certainly the baby sent down the river by Rena, an idea supported both by the baby's hair color and the presence of the golden egg thing in the flashback. The old woman said that this baby was the queen, but I am inclined to believe that this isn't the case, and that Nina is instead Rena's daughter.

I think Mashiro is the queen, simply because they have been implying that she is not the entire series.

Arika is probably something else entirely. She glows in Miyu-vision, and her she showed the ability to demonstrate Otome powers before even recieving the nano-machine injection (see episode one). However, these could be consequences of being the daughter of a meister otome. Before this episode I had assumed that most Otome serve their master for a time, and then settle down, get married, have kids, and so on. But since such a large emphasis was placed upon the new shinso having to have been an otome who bore a child, this might not be the case. In other words, I think that Arika could be Rena's child, although she wasn't the child sent down the river by Rena.

Honestly though, I've always felt this subplot was kind of meaningless. Where these girls come from is vastly less important than their actions throughout the course of the series, and this question should not be recieving the emphasis it has been.

My current theory is that Aoi is the river baby, the real queen, and an astronomically powerful Otome (which enabled her to save herself after going cliffdiving) all at once. She comes back in Episode 23 or 24 or so to wreak vengeance on everyone and, in the climactic scene back in the Windbloom castle, gets ready to kill Mashiro right in front of a brutally-beat-down Arika only to stop short and laugh about how it was all a joke and say that Mashiro can have the throne back if she wants it. Mashiro accepts, and Aoi becomes her #1 Otome with Chie (who is randomly also astronomically powerful, potentially due to Smith's crystals) and Arika (who gets booted to third on the food chain) in tow. Windbloom isn't going to have to worry about any other countries doing to it what Artai did to it for a LONG time. Hell, they could probably conquer the entire planet, what with having a giantass laser cannon and three of the most powerful Otomes the world has ever seen, but the main crew are all good people at heart so they decide not to.

Mikotocat remains as Mikotocat and shows no trace of relation to the human Mikoto - if one even exists. Nina, Nagi and Smith are all dead because they looked at Aoi the wrong way during vengence mode. Smith's corpse serves as a doormat into the castle. Nina's corpse serves as a doormat into the throne room. Nagi recieves a proper burial because, even though he took over the country, he was still really cool, not to mention hilarious.

Sergei is God knows where, which is a shame because he was a pretty cool guy. Erstin stays dead. Aoi is hotter anyway. If you need boobs, go read the manga. Tomoe is dead from Shizuru-given STDs. Shizuru is God knows where in the same vein as Sergei, except it's not a shame because no one cares about her. Natsuki is stuck in Ealis for all eternity for Haruka and Yukino to laugh at. Shiho fills in the Headmaster void at Guarderobe, with Nao playing Shizuru to Shiho's Natsuki minus all the lesbian overtones. As a result, the next few generations of Otomes are noticably more sadistic than their predecessors.

Midori and her people stop enjoying their AIDS, are cured and go on their merry way. Thanks to divine intervention (and a little help from Miyu for no good reason), Rado goes back to being Reito. Miyu is never seen again.

Everyone else remotely important (Yukariko, Maria, Takumi, Akira, Irina and the like) go on about their business as normal. Mai appears after the Episode 26 ED is over to complain about not showing up at all despite being in both OP videos.

And everyone lived happily ever after. Especially me.

I'm not sure about that... I'm kind of liking the whole "Mashiro snaps into reality" thing that they've got going on. I'd prefer Arika being the actual queen, but I've got a hunch that Mashiro isn't some random baby that got chosen to be queen either.

I just want to see how Natsuki, Shizuru, Nao and the other two pillars get their powers back. Shizuru HAS to have some sort of relation (aside from being lesbians) to Tomoe at this point (EDIT:CONTRACT, not contact rofl I don't know how that would work). Chie might be related to Natsuki, but I guess you could argue she's looking for Aoi, who is really some badass otome who isn't dead yet, since all we saw of her was FALLING and not DYING.

I want more Tomoe dammit. Something fascinates me about her character, no idea what.

That letter contains the phrases "artificial otome," "z-hime," and "valkyrie." The HiME in Mai HiME were sometimes referred to as valkyries, and it is worth noting that Midori, an artificial otome, in a sense, can summon a child just like a HiME can. I imagine that this isn't all coincidental.

Originally I was going the same route, but after they offered us at AnimeHaven their Otome translator for when we do Galaxy Angel II I started keeping theirs as well out of respect.

Hmm.

Looks like this show is heading for a Kiddy Grade-esque "fun" final battle. I expect to see lots of random special attacks from the 341251 meisters that will be participating, and for no one at all to die. I really can't see any other way they could give everyone meaningful screentime in the two episodes left. Better yet, I should actually enjoy this as long as I go into it with the right mindset.

Best of all, Shiho is missing from Gaurdarobe and has with her the Spiral Serpant gem. The appearance of Meister Shiho in the last episode, even if only for a short time, would redeem this show from many, many things.

Go grab the Your Mom releases for 25 and 26 that are out on Tokyotosho. They are perfectly fine, and the random subber's notes actually made me laugh from time to time.

Anyway, this went EXACTLY like I predicted it would in my last post - a generally light hearted, completely over the top final battle. Well, I didn't see the layltastic S-Cry-Ed final battle up in space coming. But that involved Arika and Nina, and no one gives a **** about them.

Anyways, this was a fun show. Parts of it (well, pretty much everything involving Arika of Mashiro) were cheesy to the point that I could barely watch it, but aside from that things were pretty good. It's not going to go down in my mind as a great series, but certainly an enjoyable one.

Generally speaking the anime was good, but there are still too many things that go unexplained.

Sergey goes from looking similar to Tate, to looking EXACTLY like Tate at the end + a scar. There needs to be a link to Mai. Because in the previous episodes when they talked about the fire string ruby myth they show Tate getting taken away from Mai.

The multiple mikoto cats went totally unexplained.

Why the **** was Fuuka Gakuen at the bottom of the sea/ocean? Does this mean Miyu in Otome is the same as the one found in HiME series?

What the **** is up with Miss Maria?

I KNOW there's an OAV coming out, but it seems to me like they tried to hide a bunch of stuff behind all the crazy action going on. I liked the ending, but I just felt that they didn't explain enough, or develope certain aspects of the story. Time to go grab the your-mum sub and see if it might've just been me missing a ton of stuff.

As Squeek said, perhaps we will get more explanation in the OAVs. At this point I think that Miyu is the same Miyu from HiME, and that this planet is indeed Earth. Some sort of world destroying catastrophe occured between HiME and Otome, and the Otome world is what came out of it.

More details would be nice, but I don't think they are totally necessary.

On a side note, I really don't like any of the new robes that showed up in these last two episodes. Akane and Shiho's were hilarious initially, but looking at them again all I can think about is how utterly ridiculous they look (I'm more happy about the fact that they went meister and were useful than their robes, though). Nao's SPIDERWOMAN robe was pretty stupid too. Maria's was decent, although boring. Nina's final robe of harmonious doom was meh at best.

Heh, I remember back to when art of Shizuru's meister robe first leaked out, before the first episode even aired. Everyone thought it was the coolest thing ever. I just wish that all of these later robes could have lived up to it.

I love this anime. I almost love it as much as Sailor Moon Stars rofl. The problem is that I had a headache throughout 2/3 of the series, and now that it's over I still have a headache.
