Man this show is hardcore. Kefit and I discussed it when I was midway through the series and we came up with the following description for the show.

Squeek: It's like GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGGOGOGOGOGOG WTF WAS THAT WHO CARES GOGOGOGOGOGOGGO.
Kefit: Exactly. And it sucks, but not really.
Squeek: That's exactly what I was thinking. It's a horrible show but it's awesome.
Kefit: Precisely.

(Not verbatim because it was a while back and I can't remember it.)

A strange environmental phenomenon 22 years ago in the Kanazawa prefecture caused the land to split and protrude upwards reaching unprecedented heights, creating the secluded area known as The Lost Ground. Kazuma is a young mercenary who lives in the Lost Ground, looking for any work he can find to sustain his livelihood within the harsh environment. He is one of the few people that are gifted with the Alter ability, which allows him to plaster his right arm and torso with a metallic alloy. When this mercenary encounters HOLY, an order whose purpose is to suppress and capture what they call Native Alter Users, and one of the elite members of HOLY, Ryuho, an epic rivalry begins.

To sum up the plot, I use a quote from The Simpsons.

"LET'S FIGHT!"
"THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS!"

This show is all about action. Things just happen. There are no dramatic pauses. Forget about those. It's just constantly moving ahead.

The fighting is very awesome because of the re-forming of material into weaponry and such. It's a lot like Fullmetal Alchemist, but each person only has one Alter and it can't become other things. It can evolve into greater things, but it's always just that one Alter.

The main character's voice actor fits his personality PERFECTLY. His voice is deep and gruff. It is so amazingly perfect. The dubbing (assuming you get that version) is pretty good too.

Oh, also, this came before FMA, so that was just one big huge ripoff of S-cry-ed. One more thing: the intro and ending songs suck horribly. Just skip them.

Adult Swim has been showing off the first episode.

Man, it sucks.

What, did they dub it horribly or something? The first episode was terrific. The second is even better. It just progressively gets more awesome as the series goes along.

I hope they didn't get a stupid voice actor for Kazuma. His voice actor needs to sound like he just got up with a huge hangover and is always extremely pissed off about it.

Nope. Sounds actually quite bright and cheery, like Vash the Stampede sorta.

It just wasn't impressive. And instead of HOLY I they're HOLE or something.

Kazuma actually sounded decent for a dubbed english version. It was a good start!

HOLD is the primary police organization against those with Alters. HOLY is the special group who actually HAVE Alters.

This show rules. Give it a chance or get the original.

Sorry, I'm not getting it yet. In addition to expecting hyper-super-happy-action, I was promised that Episode 2 would be better.

Episode 2 was 95% dialogue and plot, the other 5% being a guy who makes things go fast (he has a poor Mercutio personality). Explain thy self.

Either they dubbed it horribly and cut a lot, or you're missing something. I was hooked on the show by the middle of the first episode.

I suppose it will be better for you once they stop the introductions and continue the fights. I believe episode 3 has Kazuma beating on many a random folk.

Well, with the thread just having been randomly bumped, I'd like to say I think the show is pretty damn good. I've been watching the show for a little while now (I come for Futurama at 11:00, and then stay for Samurai Champloo, and then InuYasha, and now s-CRY-ed), and while I'm not really a hardcore anime fan or anything, it's really a neat show. The action bits (more like the whole show mirite) are tons better than you see in most other anime, and the plot isn't really too important so much as you kinda know who is who.

On the other hand, I really don't have much to compare it to, not being too big on anime. It's still fun to watch.

PPS: Scryed is the worst show ever, except it is randomly awesome. And the OP and ED rule too.

I saw the last episode a few days ago, I still don't get where the randomness is. All I've seen is a mediocre plot and, you know, Kazuma punching things and making them shatter. I really don't see any redeeming value in this show, and if people thought this was great...Well...Either I have different tastes, or enough people don't watch Big O (which I recently found out still plays on Adults Swim at 4am).

I enjoyed it purely because of the immense ammount of energy that drips from every picosecond of the show's run.

And because of Straight Cougar, who could turn George Bush gay if he ever desired to.

The show fails on most other levels, but not enough to take away from the enjoyment I got from basking in its energy.

Which is exactly what I said in the first post.

The story is pretty bad. The plot, development, conflicts, climax, etc. It's all really terrible.

But the ACTION is like WHOA.

Time to rewatch this.

*Shrug*

The fighting did not blow my mind.

The fighting choreography isn't particularly compelling.

The sheer energy level of the fights is what kept me hungering for more. Every fight had as much energy as the subclimax of a typical series.
