To Hans- I win.
Family guy is an anime? waaah?
Well onto my list of favorites. *points to avatar* Yes I do admit that I'm a sailor moon fan. I also love Card Captor Sakura (and I read Tsubasa so obviously I like anything remotely CLAMP) Initial D was good...got boring after watching each ep 10+ times though. My best friend Sherry recently started downloading some anime called 'Bleach' so I've been watching quite a bit of that aswell...that's about it I think :S

DBZ really isn't THAT bad, but whoever got their hands on dubbing it really messed it up good. All they're doing is paying the voice actors to scream for 2/3 of each episode.

Actaully, technically it is. Anime is just the Japanese word for cartoon, derived from Animation. Though, it does not come from Japan, thus is not considered an "Anime" by the american term.
Now for my list:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
FLCL
RahXephon
Cowboy Bebop
Those are the only ones worth mentioning.

Sailor Moon
DBZ(I'll explain this later)
FLCL
Inuyasha
Fullmetal Alchemist
Super Milk Chan (this counts, right?)
And probably a few others
Sailor Moon was my first anime I ever saw. I loved it before I even new what anime, or japanimation as it was more commonly referred to back then, was. DBZ came not much later. I first saw the dub, and liked it because I was stupid. Then I saw the original on International Channel and I lost all faith in Funimation. FLCL is obvious why I liked it. Inuyasha: I started watching when it first appeared on Adult Swim. I loved it. Fullmetal Alchemist: I've only seen the dub(which is by the same lame company that ruined DBZ so badly), and I still like it. That must mean something. Super Milk Chan is just insane and that's why I love it.
Isn't it funny that all those shows listed above have or are currently on Cartoon Network? The answer is no. Cartoon Network is awesome, and this is ample proof of it.

Off-hand though, I'd say :
Elfen Lied

Rurouni Kenshin (OVA's moreso than the series)
Cowboy Bebop
Mahoromatic :>
SCRAPPED PRINCESS :OOOOO
and I guess I'll end with Fullmetal Alchemist.

Since we have this forum, I'd like to make one thing VERY CLEAR.
READ OR DIE WAS NEVER A MOVIE.
I hate Cartoon Network for labeling it as such.
It is a three-episode OAV. The three 30-minute segments were put together and run all at the same time. It was not a movie.
Proof : http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=819
If need be, this will be in its own topic. Maybe announcemented.

Wow, I saw Read or Die a while ago, and I THOUGHT it was a show...
Until it kept going, so I thought it was a movie. And now I find out it's a show. I liked it- not too bad. But yeah, I wondered why it was kind of episodic...
And I haven't seen too much anime, due to the fact that I'm not allowed to stay up late without having to work on homework :P, so I can't usually watch Adult Swim. However, I am starting to become a fan of Rurouni Kenshin and Ghost in the Shell SAC. I also did like Cardcaptor Sakura.

Magical Project S
Mahoromatic
Jubei-chan season 1+2
Elfen Lied
Mai-HiME (although only half the series is out, so this may change)
Fruits Basket
Angelic Layer gets an honorable mention for it's mind-shatteringly good fights, as do Battle Atheletes Victory, Galaxy Angel, and Pita Ten for Akari, Milfeulle and Misha respectively.

My only exposure to anime is really through Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. I have seen very little outside of AS, like AKIRA and Spirited Away (both were great, but I only saw them because of Japanese class). I'd love to see more, but downloading is both illegal, and very time consuming. I spent about a month downloading just the six episodes of FLCL, and I've decided to never do that again, unless I have a very good reason (ie an anime which is awesome, easily accessible, and not too long).

God, the last DVD was awful. Not like it was bad, but really aggravating. However, I won't hate it based solely on the fact that they'd BETTER come out with another series. The manga's still going on, so they definitely can.
C'mon, though. Intoducing a new character and devoting the entire second-to-last episode to her? What the hell? Then not resolving or ending anything after that? Ugh.. But the show is fan-freaking-tastic.

I really didnt have a problem with the new love story starting...I actually thought it was kind of cool...but half the series involved the preperations for the Festival...AND THEY NEVER SHOWED IT. That is what got me. The series was great...had they included the Festival, it would have been even greater.
After watching the series, I seriously considered buying the rest of the manga...but then I got over it.

Afrobean

...NEVER LISTEN TO THE DAMN ACCURSED ENGLISH DUB, it sounds so horrible compared to their Japanese versions.
Isn't that the case with ALL ANIME IN EXISTENCE? The English dub never can even come close to the original Japanese sound track. Most of the time, the company that dubs the anime will just make up a script, rather than translating the Japanese script.
And since I don't recall if I posted in this thread or not, I'll combine two things together here: my favorite anime, and defense for a decent dub. FLCL- without question, the greatest anime of all time. The Japanese version is excellent, and the dub keeps nearly all of the script in tact. The few things that they changed were references to Japanese culture and were replaced with references to American culture (cherio pop replaced with crystal pepsi, and something about chopsticks changed to a conversation about sporks). Add this to the fact that the dubbers used the original Japanese soundtrack(The Pillows music+original sound effects) and just recorded new voices, makes this without a doubt the most faithful dub I've ever seen.
However, in spite of all this that I just typed defending the dub, you should still see it subtitled. The only possible reason to only see it in dub form is that you have Cartoon Network, but so slow of an internet connection that it makes downloading 6 episodes of an anime really lame.

I will not go into all the ones I like because that would take up to much message space. My current favorite anime however is Full Metal Alchemist. And there are plenty of reasons why. It's script was not butchered in dubbing, personaly I think Ed and Al sound MUCH MUCH better in english, it has a good storyline, no episode is 'wasted' on a pointless plot, the animation is good, as well as the action, and so on and so forth. I think it is the best anime ever.

Just because something is mainstream doesn't mean it's not worth watching. Doesn't the fact that it IS maintstream mean that it's very popular and widely successful? Having said that I don't enjoy most "mainstream" anime, I do however appreciate it's value and respect those who do enjoy them. Yes I do watch Adult Swim but that's not all I watch. I work night audit at a hotel and it's the only thing good on between 2 and 4 am. I don't watch anime so that people will think I am cool or unique. I do because the show is. Aslo "mainstream" anime is by far more accessible, so it's no wonder more people have seen it. You don't have to go online or in a store to find it. It's right there infront of you. Wow I didn't mean to go on for that long. My bad.

Anime is basically animated cartoons, so family guy, simpsons, futurama and all of them are anime's. Just because they're made by american people doesn't qualify them as not animated. ;)
Mine would have to be: Dragonball/Z/GT (Yes, 'm a fan of that.)
Inuyasha, Pokemon!, And the list goes on.
Can't forget Naruto though and Rurouni Kenshin though.

Anime used in English is a more specific term I think. In Japan it is the word for cartoon. So over there Family guy would be anime. But here in the states we say anime when we are refering to Japanese cartoons. Because of their distinct style of animation. It would be like saying Gumby is an anime. But then again my thoughts don't count because I'm a newbie here.
On an awsome note Bleach rules.
My Hime was bitchin.
I love Naruto.
I can't get enough "anime" (Japanese cartoons) I also like anime (non Japanese cartoons)

I started seeing an anime called Dokkoida!? and it is pretty good.
I think it would be suitable for As if one of the main charactrs opponents

It mostly makes fun of regular superhero animes.

I'll keep it alive with the following question.
What are you people seeing in Inuyasha? Have you seen the entire thing? If not, GTFO. I cannot name anybody who has seen all 167 episodes and still liked it. I thought it was interesting until I started getting a few dozen episodes in. Then it just became crap. And finally, after 167 episodes, they just don't end it. It does not end. They just end saying "Well, we're just gonna keep trying to do what we tried to do for 167 episodes and 4 movies!"
Inuyasha sucks.

You can "figure it out" in about half an episode. There's a kid trapped in a video game. It's an anime. What do you think is going to happen?
By the way, it's not an ongoing series with 100+ episodes that you "like at first". You see it all, then it's over. It's only 26 episodes long.
And every episode is just talking.

With so many new anime series arriving over from japan, it's just so hard to keep up with a favorite anymore.
But here are my top 5 favorites:
1) Paranoia agent - I've been watching this ever since it aired on a.s and it's kept me interested. always wondering what might happen.
2) Xenosaga the animation - yes they made a short 12-13 episode series based from the first xenosaga game. They changed a few things around but I loved it.
3) Saikano - wow.. this was a very depressing anime. one of the very few anime's to actually hate humanity and war.
4) Gundam 0083: Stardust memory - one of the few series that kept me interested in u.c (universal century) gundam (besides 8th M.S team).
5) The Big O - *gasp* Ever since it ended after season two it's been making me want them to hurry and perhaps get season three done *sigh*.
I have alot more that I like but it keeps changing.

Acutally, I have been impressed by the amount of effort AS puts into getting good anime on TV, as of lately.
