got a quick question. when i first switched to 4 fingers, i pretty much sucked, but now im better at 4 fingers than indexing besides a couple songs like quasar. Except for one thing, as i get better, my MA still sucks compared to my indexing MA. I was wondering if that was an advantage of indexing or if i just need to give myself time with 4 fingers since ive only been using that for a couple weeks.

Follow this advice. SMGod is probably the most reliable source you can get (no sarcasm).

I thought 4 finger equaled speed, and indexing equaled accuracy.

look at nima's threads, I think that gives you an idea.

It all depends on the player...

Most people do find more accuracy in index's I think.

indexing is in no way the most accurate... me, reach, linus, aperson (not TOO good MA anymore) have by far the best MA and we all use 4 fingers... Index is actually likely to give more perfects ESPECIALLY on very difficult songs as your speed is limited and you will thus find it difficult to reach the arrow in proper timing while four fingers gives you the speed advantage allowing you to time well.

I MA all the time, I posted a couple of songs I did demonstrating Marvelous Attack, and I only use 2 fingers.. my 2 index fingers... check out the posts.

If you have any musical background, the instrument you played will have an influence on which style you MA with better. Drummers will be better at index, and piano players will be better at 4-finger. I played both extensively, and oddly enough I use a hybrid technique where I play 85-90% of the streams I see with 3 fingers (left index, right index/middle) and index the ones that are clearly written by an index player, or 4-finger the ones written by a 4-finger player. On songs like Reach's Genocide and a lot of Toph's simfiles that are jump-intensive, I incorporate my left middle into the patterns quite often. When going for stream MA though, I try to stick to 3-finger as much as I can, because it's not as limited as index or as complex as 4-finger.

How would drumming make you better at indexing?

Piano doesn't make you any better at SM.

musical background helps a bit cause you have a better sense of rhythm plus all the training you undergo allows your fingers a greater speed than the majority of people

And guitar... doesn't help at all. Unless you play guitar right-handed and play StepMania one-haned with your left hand, or vice versa.

But I don't play like that.

So it doesn't help me :-(.

<<How would drumming make you better at indexing?>>

One drumming thing I do to build my speed is just sit down, and see what the fastest tempo I can play 16th notes for exactly one minute is. When I first started doing this every day quite a while ago, I could only go a full minute at 175. Over time I would bump the tempo and ease myself into faster tempos, and I can now hold 16ths for a minute at 216. That's 864 strokes in one minute.

I noticed as my "speed endurance" kept building like that, passing songs like Reality and being able to FC quick things like Hayden's Gaussian Blur V2 (almost got it, I suck at running man's) became excessively easier. Having well-toned "chops" had an adverse effect on my indexing, in terms of speed and timing, and becuase I haven't been drumming the last couple months I've noticed a dropoff in my indexing.

It also works to build speed in shorter bursts, to FC things like that bastard 300 bpm 16th note run in Arch's Paranoia Respect. I can almost get all the way through it without a good or a miss now.

? People can go through those paranoia respect 16th with basically all marvs. And... 16ths at 216 for a min or so isn't that fast. There are people who can do 265 or so. Like people can AAA reality and that is 259 16th. And we can PA anything up to around 265-270...

Those are finger muscles. It takes a little more endurance on a drum, especially for a whole minute, not dropping one single note. More muscle groups are involved, primarily. I know there's people who can hold 16ths in the 265-280 range for a good amount of time, but most of them also drum for a living. It's just been a hobby of mine for a few years.

I tried a few runs at Para Respect again and finally got through the run with just 2-3 greats at the tail end. My problem was that my finger on the down key was arched too much and sometimes my other finger would bump into it.

on drummania I can do trills almost as fast and I don't even drum

Then you're musically inclined beyond all recognition.

Vince, I can get my same max speed if I hold the stick with my palm, but place and hold my index on the stick, like as if you were taking a fingerprint or something. I don't know how to word it better than that, though.

You're thinking about if you just straight out hold it with your palm, which is true to an extent.

Am I th eonly one who uses three fingers (right index, middle, third)?

Could be my tuba background (uses three fingers) but it just feels more natural.

I used to play piano, that helped me just get the rhythm. Didn't help at all with 4 fingers.

That would be called one handed, one handed playing is actually the worst style if you want to get really good. If your lucky, you might get really good at one handed playing (Tank, Kilga, Moogy, Kefit) but its really hard getting good.
