View Full Version : Rhythm gamers Vs. FPS gamers.

Me and my friend got into a very heated debate recently, the topic was rhythm gamers and FPS gamers, and who possessed the greater skills.
I stand by what I said which is that rhythm gamers possess far more skill then those FPS gamers.
I mean c'mon why do you think there's less experts on guitar hero then there are people who are "godly" at Halo and COD and such?
Its cause its easy to get good at FPS and own, way to easy for my liking, now im not saying that im a Halo god or anything, but I do find the campaign easy, and I do my fair share of pwning online, and its way easy.
I am however a very well established "Guitar Hero" and there aren't many like me.
But whatever, im rambling, the point of this thread is your thoughts, what do you think?
Who possesses more skill?
Rhythm or FPS gamers?
Lets make this into a awesome thread with debates and flaming all over the place.

Well I play both FPS's and rhythm games. I've played Counter-Strike 1.6 for about 8 years now. I do say that rhythm games require more skill because it's a lot of hand eye coordination than any other game would need. But then again, you have to look at the difficulty of both games. Such as Halo 2 had an auto aiming system I believe, I'm not totally sure since I barely play Halo, some games have handicaps automatically in them, regardless if you can turn them off/on anyways. I just think that rhythm games take more skill, but that's just me.

neutral; i don't think it's fair to say which is better than which, because each one requires a different hand-eye coordination skill set...

I think you can't compare both. One uses reflex and good "targeting" skills: just aim in the head and BANG!, while the other uses motor skills: if you see an arrow pointed to left, press the left button; if you see an arrow pointed to right, press the right button; if you see a wall of arrows, read it and hit the ****ing stream or press every button you see and hope that you hit all the notes, lol.
Now seriously, I really think you can't compare both, because both uses different skills of yours. FPS uses reflex and focus, rhythm uses "hand speed" and motor skills, but uses focus too, but a "different" kind of focus, I think.

Wrong.
FPS hand eye coordination is easy, you see something, you point your stick that way, and press a button.
What?! That's what you call skill?
NO.

Well, good sir, it's not always true. My Orkut (this **** is the SAME thing as Facebook, don't worry) profile has 700+ friends, and IRL I know lots of people, have lots of friends, so the relation between Facebook and RL you tried to make shows you fail. Uh, it's harder than just oh look a person, I'll look over there. Your brain does a lot more than that when you actually are playing, especially under pressure at say like a tournament or something.

I had no idea he was Hispanic lol, but before anyone else jumps on Whocares dick to defend him, lemme make it clear that I think hes a pretty cool dude as well, and im sure he knows im just fudging around, so vacate the guys nuts.
On another serious note: I wish I could go into an FFR thread without reading a bunch of ****ing trollposts by a bukakkespam of 16-20 year olds completely derailing every single thread into a pussyfight.

I digress, though -- I'd say they're simply different skill sets, but one is no more "harder" to achieve than the other in terms of expert status. Both genres have their little nuances and reflexive muscle-memory boosts and strategy. Much like an SM/FFR player can instinctively move their fingers to hit a huge torrent of jumpstream patterns, an expert FPS player knows how to move around (both rotationally and directionally at the same time) and has great weapon accuracy, and (hopefully) a good metagaming ability.
My friend I was having the debate with said almost the exact same thing except he was drunk and was kind of slurring.
[although he maintained that FPS took a wee bit more skill]

it's easy to think you're a pro at FPS until you face a true beast who is always able to outplay you. i think to be the best in any field, you have to use your mind a lot and have the most focus, ingenuity, or perspective. don't be biased just because you're good at guitar hero :/

I think you can compare the aspect only with someone who hasn't tried either of the kinds of games before.
We take playing rhythm games for granted because we are used to matching what we see and pressing it in the proper timing.
In a somewhat similar aspect, FPS players tend to memorize where to put their crosshair in relation to where they need to stand to get the most optimal shot on their opponent. They take that aspect for granted because they've built up the proper reflexes needed to constantly do that over and over again.
Someone who hasn't tried either of these games is indifferent to each aspect and therefore can actually try and see whether not one is easier in comparison to the other.

Theres a difference between flaming and hating.
Like the thread about my car where everyone just hated on it? Yea thats what we call hating, almost everything that went on here is flaming, why? Because there was nothing to hate on. The only hater post was by Phe0nixfag when he hated on my hair.

I still think Rhythm gaming takes far more skill, the audience for rhythm gaming is huge, its just the bulk of that audience plays in the medium/hard difficulty. The audience for FPS games is def just as big, but the bulk of that audience is really good at the game they play.

Halo, not being exposed to either doesn't really mean one will inherently be easier to elucidate as a more/less difficult genre. Someone might just suck at FPS. Others might suck at rhythm. Either way, I think you'd need to talk to someone who was top of their game at BOTH if you wanted a more well-rounded opinion in terms of what is more difficult (difficulty being, say, time taken to achieve, focus required, practice needed, mental load, etc). And you'd prob have to ask a lot of people.
In the end it just comes down to personal preference and personal skillsets in determining which genre is more difficult for that person. I think there may be a lot of bias because the learning curves are DEFINITELY different.

...ok.
Also--I thought of another thing. Someone who uses the same skill in both games might be able to give a better judgment of what's easier. Here's another example that I can think of:
A person playing on a DDR/ITG machine not only has to time their coordination with the rhythm of their steps, but they have to be able to hold a consistent flow during the entire song to not fail.
Likewise, a person playing a FPS game on a high difficulty where they aren't allowed many mistakes has to not only be able to be accurate with their gun, but also to time themselves so they don't recklessly run into enemies.
Which goes back to our initial question--which is harder? A person playing a DDR song that they can pass the song one out of every two times because of physical stamina? Or a person who's playing a FPS shooter and can only beat their level one out of every two times because of mental fatigue?
It all pretty much goes back to saying that those who are indifferent will give you the better result.

I never really thought about it this way. Wouldn't someone who's at the top of their game claim indifference to both things though?
