Did I ever say it's ok to act on pedophilic tendencies? Pretty sure nobody in this thread condones that, but pedophilic thoughts (read: NOT pedophilic acts) are something that someone doesn't choose to have. They just have them. You're judging all pedophiles based on actions they might not even ever commit. If anything, they need psychiatric help, not 10+ years of torture in jail (because they sure don't take kindly to those kind of folks in there).

I really do think that possessing child porn is grounds for jail time. Maybe not ten years, but there's definitely implications that can be gathered solely based on possession. The images had to come from somewhere, and to be able to look past the fact that all of the children in the images are abused, usually in more ways than one, is mind-blowing to me.

I will disagree that mere possession of something as vile as child pornography is grounds for being sent to any prison unless there is guaranteed protection which will pretty much never happen; prison guards are manipulative and are commonly sadistic towards those associated with crimes of the like. The implications of possessing or viewing something as opposed to committing the acts portrayed is beyond cruel and usual. I have never been viciously raped and/or beaten mercilessly and I don't think any individual who never actually carried out an act of the sort should be either.

EDIT: there is a serious difference between jail time, and prison time. County jail time? Maybe. Prison? Most definitely not and that's where they all go.

Or someone well-versed in the reality of what prison life entails as opposed to county jail. If you seriously think someone possessing anything that does not inflict direct harm should be viciously raped and beaten in a prison inevitably as opposed to reformation through professional help, then you are plain sadistic. Crimes of these sorts can be evaluated on a case by case basis as opposed to sending them all off to the same place to endure unimaginable suffering. You don't have to tell me how wrong child pornography is. A hellacious existence for even a day concerning this particular crime IS cruel and unusual. The magnitude of the stigma does not override this fact.

Your thought process falls somewhere along the lines that "they should have thought about that before buying heroin, meth, dmt, marijuana plants, anything else that doesn't directly harm anyone except themselves potentially because the law is the law!" Gtfoutta here judge dredd. People go to prison for these crimes as well which fall under the same severity (class 3 felony) and are prone to the same fate, except that the perpetrators of the crime we're talking about are specifically targeted. My argument is basically that prison time for most any crime is not acceptable and that our means of punishing those disobeying the law is extremely outdated and needs to be looked at from a therapeutic perspective. Drug addicts don't need prison, a scary potentially brutal reality, they need treatment. I feel the same applies to possessors of said material.
