Use Velocity's Engine with Velocity Noteskin or Orbular. At least that's what I do with songs that have really annoying backgrounds.

If you play the chart enough, you pretty much memorize where most of the notes are, so even if you can't see them well, you KNOW they're there.

Even with velocity noteskin, its still hard to read for me :/

If you play the chart enough, you pretty much memorize where most of the notes are, so even if you can't see them well, you KNOW they're there.

Or if you're playing on a laptop, use the stepmania noteskin and tilt the screen back away from you. It dulls out the bright blue/white bg and you can still the white outline around the arrows

I play on a laptop, but tilting the screen back is pointless imo, I just play it normally over and over.

I will admit, the ending of p4u v2 is freaking BRUTAL with those goddamn white-outline drummers, jesus christ. The notes basically disappear when that part comes.
