There are over 50,000 undergrads alone on campus here, so it's kinda hard to tell. But I'm pretty sure I'm one of the only ones who plays FFR or SM, so I'll go with that.

I'm probably the best at being an asshole. Several people are better than me at ddr, ffr, bm/iidx, and every other rhythm game. Also, I'm pretty good at .. nevermind.

lol. uh, i have the highest grade of calc takers, highest grade of ap chem students. about 3rd in school in running a mile, about 3rd in rubik's cubes, about 2nd in tennis, not really best at anything other than FFR/SM/ITG. school has ~2500 people. oh, and i'm about the best at marching haha.

funny how pretty much everyone mentions FFR, however obvious it might be.

Wrong. MrRubix is the best at FFR, but he doesn't know all 1 million+ people on FFR. He doesn't need to; a third-party judges relative skill levels and determines that he's the best. That third-party is the FFR community, along with the game's scoring system and the fact that he's the only one to pass vROFL so far.

You don't need to know someone personally to know that you're better than them at something.

As for anything else, I don't know. Probably the best guitar hero player and possibly a few other things but I don't know for sure, so.

COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

The claim was that in order to know that you're the best at -anything-, you need to know every single person competing for the title, which is false. I wasn't trying to compare it to what I was talking about before, since yes, it is different.

The other issue, pertaining to my previous posts, I figured was already resolved due to what I said before, about how my area agrees that if you elect not to attempt to become the best, you cannot claim you are the best. And like you said, that's just an issue of semantics. If your community sees the title of "the best" differently, then that's fine by me. Just know that in my area, we see it the way I've already spoken of.

EDIT: I might as well use your examples to explain what I'm talking about.

As per my previous example, a world record in the Olympics is the fastest recorded time. It doesn't make the person the fastest in the world. It makes their time the fastest recorded.

Any person who does not compete to have their time officially recorded forfeits their right to be considered in determining who holds the title "fastest in the world." By this principle, yes, the person who holds the world record DOES have that title. Does it mean that they can't be beaten by anyone else in the world? No. Does it mean they have the title of "fastest in the world?" Yes.

I'm the best at FFR and StepMania. I know this because I live in a town of around 2,000 people, and surely not half of the town is in high school. I've gotten a few people interested in playing FFR, and there's only been a few people I know of who had played it before.
