Any criterion you use to establish a metric of superiority for a rapper (lyrical complexity, novelty, variety, delivery) will invariably just be some field you could put on a slider and slide to be more or less important depending on individual preference. "Lyrical complexity" itself is a nebulous thing anyway since it's not clear if you're talking about, say, rhythm or rhyme or semantic content.

Glorifying complexity of meaning in rap lyrics can be futile because there is only so much you have to work with; after a certain level of complexity, your flow sucks, and the only way to ramp up the complexity factor without making it a stilted piece of shit is to render it beatless poetry. Pragmatic complexity can be just as, if not more interesting. That's basically all Kanye is; his raps are pretty 'easy' but he's a Turducken of context, which is why so many music critics like him.

Only reason I didn't say MF DOOM was because it was already mentioned, but I'm a huge fan of MF DOOM, especially when he's in Madvillain because Madvillainy was my favorite project involving MF Doom.




I also just discovered The Underachievers and I think they're pretty good imo

Snow Tha Product is a great female rapper with a sick flow and beats pretty much any female rapper out there, especially Shitty Minaj

Rittz is also a rapper that I think is good. His flow is either fast or really fast which I think is pretty entertaining.
