I don't think it's about the learning curve, more about how pretty much all of the people who played the original DotA either switched to LoL (like I did) or HoN, got tired of waiting for something new and quit or just don't want to switch over to DotA 2.
As for completely new players, it's more a matter of how much more visibility League has and how accessible it is where as DotA is more of an underground game with not much marketing going on. It was only a mod for a game (Warcraft 3) to begin with anyways.
