i was talking about having the client windowed so you could actually see the friend list/chat/request and whatever else is on the bottom of the screen, not in game

When you log into the game at first, you get a window where all of the interface stuff is. This is the client.
After you finish selecting champions, the client places itself into the background of your computer and opens up the actual game, which can be fullscreen or windowed, depending on your settings.
You said you couldn't see your buddy list because the window was too big. The buddy list is accessed from the client, not the game. Resize the client, not the game.Rhythm Simulation Guide
