Try nerfing your video settings and turn off Vertical Sync. It only takes 1GB on XP to run WoW at full settings completely maxed out in every possible way...in Vista a few hundred more MB at most. Minimal settings probably only use 500MB or RAM, 750MB AT MOST with Vista. Since it's a laptop...I'm assuming it has a crappy card, or it has integrate graphics...sorry I just really really really enjoy correcting this stuff T_T.

) And it runs perfectly fine on a High/Medium realm, Ghostlands. Also, I usually have youtube, tweetdeck (for twitter), and seamonkey (my e-mail client) in the background. Also I have WoW in windowed mode. So you shouldn't have to be confined to low population servers.
