in most cases, people don't go on shooting sprees because they're trying to solve something

IMO it's not that necessarily, but it's about having a nice peaceful and empathetic relationship with those around you, and to go out of your way to have people feel nice. Small good deeds go a long way.

A few months ago I was feeling really depressed, hating work and the prospect of it, was standing in line at a subway to buy my lunch, and there was a woman in front of me. She looked at me a few times, finished ordering her sub and after she'd paid she said Have a wonderful day, I covered it for you."

Really made me feel awesome, and I proceeded to do the same for someone another time. It's a great feeling you get afterwards.

I seen this on the news last night. School shootings are happening way too often now... a lot more than they need to be. (Which shouldn't be at all)

This thread reminds me of a conversation I had with my mum. My mum always wakes up very early so she can wave my 26-year-old brother goodbye when he goes to work. My brother's going to move out fairly soon. Not long ago I asked her why she still waves him goodbye (considering it means she sleeps like four hours during weekdays, and she is clearly exhausted at times). She replied along the lines of: "I can still wave him goodbye now. Soon he will be moved out, and I can't do it anymore. And what if I decide to one day stay in bed because I'm too tired or lazy to get up, don't wave him goodbye, and he dies in a car crash? I would never forgive myself."

So she waves him goodbye every morning at 6:30, six days a week. Not the exact same as a hug, but the message is the same.

I think that everyone should see relationships as special without taking any for granted. Many people don't know how much they treasure a relationship until that person isn't there anymore. I hope everyone will learn how important friends and family can be.

@OP: Wow, it must really be something when events like this hit close to home x.x I'm glad to hear that there was no deaths at least so hopefully that brings you some peace of mind The fact that the shooting happened in the first place still makes me upset though
@paperclipgames: that's quite the touching story and the fact that your mother is so persistent about it shows that she really cares Although perhaps she could possibly reconsider a different way to show her love since the current one is causing her to be sleep deprived >.<

Anyways, I don't know how prevalent it is elsewhere, but hugs are a common welcoming and a parting gesture here. I hug my mom every time I see her
