Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
It's fine, I'm just being ahead of time. You can actually 'freeze' a selection of 10 songs from my suggestions and come back to the rest when a majority of it has been reviewed. Just don't want to forget those.
@choof: And with that I'd agree with you about the signification of the word influence. It's a shame I now know there exists such an hipster circlejerk around this kind of music. Can't believe people have a tendancy to condemn and glorify artists freely. But to each their own. We do also have our portion of bias, it only depends to what extent. Edit: Good effing review, getting better, they actually make me want to go lend an hear. Last edited by Crazyjayde; 12-4-2013 at 05:49 PM.. |

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
One thing for sure, I generally find it easier to talk about metal since I know the genre more. Electronic music, for example, uses a different vocabulary I'm really not familiar with, so it was hard for me to talk about Certified Air Raid Material. Maybe because it was my first time writing music reviews in English. Well, except those 4 reviews I did on The Beatles in my college class.
About the /mu/ thing, I don't have anything against the hipster trend. I do hate when people have a snobbish attitude when it comes to music taste and that's not an exception to them. It's the same thing in every music community, you'll find people that will praise or despise some musicians with a very nasty attitude. It happens all the time, everywhere.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious arts. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
The best band ever ? Personnally, I don't think so, there's a lot other bands that I vastly prefer more than them. They were incredibly influential (because of their huge success and popularity) and they brought a lot of new recording techniques that were groundbreaking at the time. If it wasn't for the huge team (George Martin ingenious work) behind their music, they wouldn't be so much known today. So yeah, when those publications say the "greatest" act of the millennium, I'm probably sure it's a mix of quality and popularity...
I'm more worried about the state of rock music when it comes to, for example, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Most of the time, they really miss the mark and don't recognize adequately the founding fathers of the genre because they want to shoot for a more general audience so they can have better television ratings. Same with the Grammy Awards. Why do you say this ?

RTPN - 2003-2008 (actual name of the album is 2003-2008). It's a mix of electro and industrial.

I don't see any point to go there anyway, if it's about discovering music then you're always better off by yourself. If it's about discussion, then there's plenty good boards over RYM.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
Answer : before I go to bed.
Day Five - December 5th, 2013 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Digital-Dance by Software (recommended by t-rogdor) 1. Oceans-Breath 2. Magnificient-Shore 3. Waving-Voices 4. Island-Sunrise 5. Magic-Beach 6. Sea-Gulls-Audience 7. Digital-Dance 8. Magicians-Song 9. Percussion-Island Software is a duo comprised of Michael Weisser and Peter Mergener that released ambient/electronic albums for over 2 decades. They're often compared to a bunch of Berlin School musicians, most notably Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze. A type of music I'm really not familiar with. Digital-Dance isn't their first album, but it's the first that gives so much importance to the saxophone. Let's talk about this saxophone. It really can't melt right with everything else, it's an awkward presence in the room. Sometimes, it produces beautiful sounds, but most of the time, it feels out of place. I found myself laughing at some of those pre-programmed sounds. The drums, the bongos, the brass section and... oh man the brass section in Waving-Voices was just so awful. I even question if the sea and seagulls I've heard in the very beginning of the album were real or not. And the voice-part near the middle of Island-Sunrise, "oooooh" "aaaaah", looks like someone took a dump in the middle of the studio recording. Hear it for yourself. So, it didn't age well. Like, at all. It's probably stuck in its own time period. Some say it's cool because it sounds really retro, and retro is popular at the moment. Honestly, that argument might work for things that can survive through time, but this was not one of them. But! There are some very nice melodies deeply buried. You just have to get over the cheesiness of the sound, that's not easy to do, but once you do, that's when you can start to understand. There's the very beginning of the s/t song Digital-Dance that is reminiscent to In the House, In a Heartbeat by John Murphy, very enjoyable. It's those small moments that really shines. They soon fades, so you need to keep a good attention. Or, alternately, you could just let go the music in the background and don't question about all that stuff, unlike me. It's the exact type of album I can say "so bad it's great". There's not a lot of stuff in the world where I can say that. There's The Room and that album. Maybe for the ultimate experience, you could watch these two at the same time, but do it at your own risk. If you're looking for something that sounds like it, more ambitious with a better production, look for the Drive OST by Cliff Martinez. Or just watch the movie if you want the full experience. I could recommend also Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon by Powerglove for a similar 80s vibe. One thing I found out, thanks to a review by mrs_todd on Discogs was that the album cover is a shot taken from a 1981 film called Carla's Island meant to highlight the capabilities of computer graphics. Very cool thing to know. I couldn't decide which song to bold. Most of the songs are very similar in term of quality. No standout today. My rating : ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆ Btw, I bumped my rating for MSI up a star too. I was too severe I think.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
exactly! glad you picked up on that. It's cheesy as hell now, all things considered, but the album's basically vaporwave before vaporwave was a thing. it's one of those things where you can put it on and pretty much instantly be taken to a different time period.
