Why do we (you) cuss?

I don't know, I am sort of indifferent on the whole cussing issue.

I cuss to portray emotions, just as I use emoticons on the internet to do the same. I don't think just because you cuss you are uneducated, or lack vocabulary, saying that is like complaining that people use the words 'I, or me' too often.

People who complain about people who cuss should also correct people in pronunciation, it bugs the hell out of me when someone says "Off- Ten" I realize that it is also an accepted pronunciation, but it is still second choice in the dictionary, (Often is pronounced Off-in, for those of you who don't know.)

I also think non-verbal behaviours work well to protray emotion, I almost always meld extreme facial expressions, and hand/body movements to paint pictures in people's heads, and usually whilst cursing I build up to it, sort of creating an emotional release in someone's mind.

In my mind, if someone complains about people cussing due to lack of intelligence, they should also complain to people who use any internet speak, or emoticons, which NO ONE I know does, except perhaps my English teacher, and she only really thinks it is bad in a written report, but that includes contractions also- which I don't- by any stretch- consider contractions to be unintelligible slang.

Like I said, it's all a very touchy subject, and by picking a side, and attempting to stand by it, in my mind, you affirm your un-intelligibility.

It's just words. What makes them bad is the connotations that come with them. Personally, I could care less if someone swears, as long as it's not every other word. That just makes them sound like idiots.

No matter how uncivilized it is, it helps the person you're talking to know you mean business.

You read my mind but also, i think there is one other reason. Sometimes, when you get realy mad or somthing, calling them an idiot just wont cut it, you want somthing realy bad to say because nobody cares if you call them stupid or somthing. Therefore, i cuss because somtimes i need a stronger word to use.

That may be true, but in today's society, so many people swear excessively that, personally, it has no effect on me anymore. I will give the same response to somebody who is angry at me as to somebody who is angry at me and is cussing and swearing at the top of their lungs as well.

Cursing is a huge part of any language. It has played a role since the beginning of communication. If you want to look at the history of the language, a good place to look is at the curse words.

I don't see why people absolutely refuse to say any curse words. In my opinion, that's as bad as absolutely refusing to speak properly (meaning speaking like a 'tard or something). I can see why someone would choose not to curse at people. But in general? You're cutting yourself out from a very important part of language.

I curse often. Do I curse people? Sure, but usually to either make light of a situation, bash them in a joking way, etc. Have I cursed at someone in a hurtful manner? Yes, but that's a very rare occasion. I mostly curse during games, sports, or other activities. I curse a lot when playing table tennis as a way of venting frustration from a bad shot. It's much better than throwing my paddle. Plus, my friend Muhammad gets a kick out of it when I use the weirdest curse word concoctions or say something unexpected.

Cursing is very much relative. There are appropriate and inappropriate times to use cursing. It can be both uncivilized and civilized. Regardless, it's a very important part of language.

I'll admit it... I cuss... Alot... Mainly I do it for emphasis... For example... Its cold outside... or its F***ing cold outside... one of them proves your point a little bit better... And another reason i cuss, Is simply to put someone down... Instead of I hate you... I F***ing hate you, you son of a b****. So i simply use it for emphasis or to insult someone...

Cussing is just pretty much the way you tell someone indirectly to shut up and start listening. Unless you get one of those 12 year old cussers. You know the ones that go "You fuck piss shit eating cock suck fuck mofo," the ones that say stuff that makes them look stupid. It's great for expressing your true feelings. Although, people get like "OMFG YOU SAID A BAD WORD KILL HIM" whenever you cuss if you do it in a public area. It's just a word, and it helps express your feelings better.

Cussing is useful sometimes, but I dont see why some people use it for no reason, in every other sentence.

Ok im 11, yes really young, and I do have a cussing problem.
People often tell me not to cuz its bad.

Yes i have problems with cussing, but i know how the habit got started so i got an excuse!
When i was young(er) i started to get depression (note: i still have it)
and that often made me do stupid or irrasional things.
During that time period i began to swear in pity of myself.
and after a while it became a habit.

Swearing is an art. Mastering the art adds an entire dimension to one's speaking skills. People that view it as a low-class thing to do are wrong.

I think my ability to naturally blend swears into my everyday conversations makes for a much wider range of emotion I can easily display. It's sort of like how I can pretend to have any emotion on the internet without actually having it (by using caps, excessive swearing, !!!!s, etc.). I can act like I'm very pissed in real life just by swearing, even if I'm not remotely angry.

People swear so much now that they have dulled the words. When some of you people use it, you might get some attentiveness from your friends, but if I were to use those words, I would have EVERY word being listened to. Why? Because I almost never use them. That means the I still have words stronger than many of you people, cause the same word has more negative value when I say it, than when you say it.

But Cen, that's true with any word. If I decided never to say "Beans" for the rest of my life, it would be quite shocking when, thirty years from now, I very causually said "pass the beans, please." Saying that a word is 'stronger' just because you don't use it applies to pretty much everything.

I hear people cussing every day at school, but that's mainly because they are a pack of idiots and they don't have a wider range of vocabulary and I have gotten used to hearing it from them. If I hear someone cuss who doesn't cusss that much, then I get surprised. I'll admit it, I cuss, not all the time or everyday for that matter, but only when I'm angry because then I have a hard time controlling myself and that's when people know to leave me alone before they get punched in the face.
