I got it. At least I hope I got it. This is a pretty stark revelation to just hit me in the face just seconds ago.

Iwata has been quoted as saying that he hates the confines of the television screen and wishes to do away with that. Wishes to make it so that video games aren't projected onto monitors or screens. It's possible that his dream is going to take place on the Wii.

Do you remember that video a while ago with the French guy holding a small device in his hand that became a flower through this camera device he had? He also drove a car that reacted to real-world objects.

What if this is the way Nintendo is displaying the new console? I mean, we've seen how the controller works through the many trailers and teasers, but we've never seen the way it's shown. This may be the final secret Iwata has had up his sleeve.

The video with the French guy was posted here about a year or so ago with the topic title of "Is this the Revolution?" or something like that.

We had discussion about it and it basically came down to saying "No."

But it's been a long while since then

What you need to do is futher elaborate on your theory, because right now the video doesn't clearly show what you mean. I was confused for a while until I put things together.

In an interview with Steve Manning, a big dog of Igor International a company who named The Signature at MGM Grand and MTV’s URGE, it is revealed why he thinks Nintendo has released a fake name for their new system. “Allowing your audience to vent is not SOP[standard operating procedures] in a name announcement, and also telegraphs that Nintendo knows what a stinker this name would be.” He also says “It’s not possible to engineer a worse name for this product.”

Another point, which could be the biggest giveaway of all with this whole story, may be the fact that Wii has no registered trademarks. Not with Nintendo, not in the US, not in Japan. One of us could trademark this name quick, and Nintendo would have to shell out to us. If “Wii” was the real system name, the trademark would have been snatched up months ago. “This leads us to conclude that Nintendo has in fact registered the real name under a dummy corp, which is SOP when trying to keep a name secret prior to launch.”

With “Wii”, Nintendo is obviously creating a new buzz, and they hope it is enough to bring people into the name. People will hear the name, look it up, and find more about it. After all the buzz regarding the name simmers, E3 will be the chance for the real REVOLUTION name to be announced.

It's possible.

Here's the Kotaku article regarding the potential name hoax.

In addition, while http://nintendowii.com/ redirects to Nintendo, http://wii.com/ doesn't. I looked it up, and it is registered to "Willamette Industries, Inc." and has been since 1994. It's obviously not in use though, as it loads nothing. If Nintendo wanted to keep the name "Wii", they surely would have bought the domain name off these guys. Under a false name if need be, but they definitely would have gotten it somehow. (Seriously; they paid some guy tons of money in the past just to buy Pikachu.com. This would have been a no-brainer.)

I'm convinced. Touche, Nintendo.

Can't wait until E3.

I have to disagree with you, jamuko. I believe the name is legit. The official name will likely be "Nintendo Wii", just like the DS. For example, ds.com directs to an essentially useless site, nintendods.com goes to Nintendo's official Nintendo DS site. Several full names do redirect to nintendo.com, but that's expected. n64.com redirects, too, but that is to be expected also, as N64 became well-established in communicating the system itself. Other abbreviations, such as gcn.com and snes.com, do not.

My basis for believing in the name is just as strong as anyone against it. We can't be sure until E3, but for now I'm going to trust that this is what Nintendo will stick with.

Yeah, I actually came back here with the intention of editing my post just now, heh.

After a few hours of this sitting in my mind, I'm not so sure I'm convinced anymore. And you know what? I don't mind the name, either. I'm actually starting to like it.

I still find the "evidence" at least eyebrow-raising though, even if it is ultimately misleading.

As a side-note, about it being the "Nintendo Wii"... it won't be. I've read so many articles and such in the past day or two that I can't place exactly which this came from, but one of the Nintendo peeps was quoted as saying "There is no 'Nintendo Wii' - it's just 'Wii'." It's part of the simplicity idea.

And one must admit, while the "Revolution" is a cool name, it'd sound a bit pretentious to people who aren't used to the name already (i.e., the large potential market of non-gamers, who they are attempting to draw in).

Whatever the case...
Go Nintendo. Still can't wait until E3.

They haven't even registered the trademark. They said it was in the works for over a year now.

If you're tossing up ideas for a name of a major product that will sell out millions of copies, you register the trademarks for the final ten choices just to make sure.

I just saw that today on that naming site blog.

When you look at all of the gamespot whining idiots, you're looking at the main comsumer of this system. It just doesn't seem like a good idea.

Also, why would they release the official name BEFORE e3? It would make sense if it was publicity.

Kids 12 and under will not take it seriously.
