on gendered words in French, MarioNintendo linked me a video that showed off a bunch of "stupidly gendered" words that don't really make any sense, along with some silly ways to remember how they are gendered

for example, a chair (une chaise) is feminine "because you sit on it"; the video was pretty funny

at the end, it showed off a few more silly ones, like testicles are feminine and vagina is masculine, and I think this further supports Dingle's point that gendered words aren't really meant to be relevant to anything

also, iirc, a group of men in Latin (do not remember the word at all) is feminine, another example where it "doesn't make sense"

you just can't really think about it like that

caterva, -ae? idk immediately what word you want here

auriga, -ae (charioteer) is the same though, even though that was a typically male job

i think grammatical gender is a convenient enough way of marking distinctions of animacy, but also allowing you to have multiple noun classes in a way that makes some sense to people. for latin i can just imagine the declensions forming around several historically well-rooted words they had, like how dies, -ei (day) still manages to be irregular even in 5th declension iirc. i used to have some thoughts about potential organizing principles of the declensions but they might be lost to time now
