make sure it fits well more than anything else. I tried on like 50 suits before I bought mine and even then I got it tailored afterward.
dappered.com is a good resource for affordable formal clothing. if you know your measurements and have a few hundred to spend you can get a really good suit from indochino.com -- mine personally is Ralph Lauren but if I had to do it over again I'd go with indochino.Comment

I don't know my measurements, and I certainly wouldn't be keen on spending hundreds of dollars on clothing I would wear infrequently without even trying it on first.
Once I get a nice wad saved away though, I would seriously like to go out and get myself a nice suit. I just would have to try it on first.Comment
