Another part of being able to fit more relevant plot was that they just had more time to. The Madoka movies are actually longer than the series.

The characters aren't flat or boring. They're just a bit flatter and more boring than you'd expect from a show that does everything else so well.

They're also not written AT ALL like high schoolers, but it's not like Madoka's the first show that tries to pretend "hardened death-acclimatized veteran" attitude on a 14 year old like Homura isn't really fucking silly. Watching anime, you learn to go with it.

Heero Yuy was 15 at the start of Gundam Wing. Yeah.

idk if you've watched the whole thing yet but
Homura is like waaaay older than she looks.

Anyway Homura has her reasons. You'll know by the end of it.
edit: also MALGraph has recommended me to watch Mushishi and the second season is airing so I might pick it up.

You're definitely right though. Even beyond the super genius type characters, a lot of them are way too worldly beyond their years...not that it's a bad thing in all cases.
in the one timeline, Homura has to kill Madoka to stop her from turning to into a witch. I'm pretty sure having to watch your friends die multiple times every time you reset the world, and feeling like ultimately killing your friend is the only possible solution, it would do that to a person. If you spent 10 years repeating the same 2-3 weeks I'm sure you'd become a genius of that week in no time. You'd probably stop seeing your friends as actual people by the 4th - 5th loop and start doing what you absolutely have to in order to save your best friend. 10 years is a LONG time. (you're only 21 and have been making conscious decisions for probably only 15-16 of those years.)

I know, that's part of what I meant by learning to go with it. A lot of things people are spoilertagging here are things I already suspected on my own, or knew already from spending too much time on danbooru.

Having said that, Homura's not the only, or worst, example. But I actually like most of these characters (don't really know what Kyouko's about yet) so I don't want to ruin it by thinking too hard.

                    (Double post because bump)

I finished Madoka. Probably the most unsatisfying end to a show I've seen in a while.

I generally like happy shows, but I understand what Madoka is, and I would've been okay with any number of tragic endings for any other character in it, but... I felt like in order for the story to have any value the way it was set up, Homura saving Madoka without losing her or separating her from her friends and family was non-negotiable.

Like yeah, Madoka's wish accomplished a lot of good things and did a passable job of saving the universe and so on, but you didn't need to watch five seconds of the show to know it was going to. She's the title character. If there was anything I thought the ending COULDN'T be about for the show to remain forceful and meaningful, it was denying Homura everything she spent the entire story striving for. A story she was BY FAR the most important character in. Maybe the only character who mattered at all.

Not because I just wanted a happier ending (although I did), but because the ending they did choose made me feel like nothing was resolved that wasn't guaranteed to be resolved anyway. It was a cop-out. Rather than dropping something clever enough to do the rest of the story justice, they just mailed in the wish they spent five or six episodes foreshadowing. They didn't need to give Homura a pefect happyhappykyun ending, but they could've had her finish with SOMETHING more than she started with. Something to make it feel like the show didn't finish exactly where it began, minus one pink-haired plot device. It had no human element. It had no sense of justice or resolution.

I can probably still give it a 9.0 just because the RIDE leading up to the end is so great, Kajiura's soundtrack is flawless, and the gestalt has so much cool-factor. But dat end.

Watch rebellion. Be warned though: It'll either satisfy your need for a resolution or make you even more mad.

I thought the art in the labyrinths was the coolest part of Madoka.

Still hanging around on Heavens Lost Property, should be fun for awhile longer. The humors crudeness is still pretty comical

It's pretty easy to make a mistake like this actually, regardless of if English is your first language or not.
