Re: Oculus Rift
I think we should care a lot about what Facebook does if they have $2B to just throw around on crap like Oculus Rift. Fuck I really wanted one too.
http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/03/25/no...creeps-me-out/ Also Notch cares. |

Oculus Rift is dead, the zuck wants to turn it into a social platform
"Please log in to facebook to play" I feel bad for all the people that backed this initially, their outage is completely justified. inb4 Sony decides to capitalize on this and make bring Morpheus to pc as well |

Farmville 3 VR - Watch your animals poop, just like in real life!
It's too bad that it takes 6 hours worth of stamina to stimulate their bowels. Good thing energy boosters are on sale.

Re: Oculus Rift
Saw this yesterday and was extremely disappointed. This was going to be the coolest thing of the decade. Totally ruined.

Re: Oculus Rift
The thing that bothers me even more about this: Oculus Rift was a kickstarter program that was backed with over $2 million dollars, if I memory serves me correctly. It almost seems like the money that was donated went to waste because a financial super-power with plenty of money took their concept on.
This is pretty sad; I don't foresee the technology being used nearly as effectively as it could have standing alone. |

Re: Oculus Rift
So what companies would be even worse than facebook for acquiring Oculus? Maybe if we think about how it could have been even worse, facebook won't seen quite as bad.

I'm not happy with facebook buying oculus rift though. I fear that facebook will force you to stay "connected". It's the current trend I guess, the whole connected thing and I don't like it one bit. I don't even like facebook but there's basically no alternative offered that doesn't mingle with other services or isn't deserted. It's being shoved down your throat.

Re: Oculus Rift
I don't know why people think Facebook would drive this into the ground. It's in their best interest for it to be successful and they're going to do everything in their power to get it there.
I'll admit that this might mean changes in the ultimate goal, but it could also remain true to its indie roots. There is NOTHING stopping Facebook from running this thing semi-independently and just using their new asset as a foothold to get into "serious" gaming. It could still end up being solid hardware for the PC gaming set when it gets a consumer release. Ultimately the real question will be third party software support, and that's a hard question regardless of which company is writing the checks on hardware manufacturing. But even if Facebook DOES bungle it, that's not the end. This technology is up-and-coming, and its coming is inevitable. Oculus Rift is NOT the only face-mounted "virtual reality" unit out there. Sony's got something in development (for PS4 only? i dunno lol), and I've read a few articles about something called Avegant Glyph, something that's not EXACTLY the same thing but has similar functionality. Oculus Rift didn't invent the idea of virtual reality, they aren't the first, and they won't be the last.

Re: Oculus Rift
All I know is I want the kind of VR tech in the anime Dennou Coil. That seems more like something facebook should be working on instead of Oculus. If Zuckerberg saw that show he would probably agree.
Also maybe this acquisition is just a cover up for the bullshit that is going to go down with whatsapp. Hell for all we know maybe he is going to combine the two and make the kind of VR glasses from dennou coil. |

Re: Oculus Rift
precisely what is most worrying about this. Facebook is just pulling money from their asshole and I really wonder where it all comes from. They're going to have to make the ORVR worth their $2B somehow. What lengths are they going to in order to do this I wonder?

Re: Oculus Rift
I mean, if it were used for something other than Facebook, then I'd understand. Right now it's easy for me to imagine how easily and badly this would fuck up. Then again, finding someone doing something actually useful in this world is hard nowadays
